Pirates Take Down Penn For Third-Straight Win

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Seton Hall men's soccer team (3-2-1) picked up its third-straight victory on Sunday night, downing Penn (0-3-0) on the road by a score of 2-1. For the second-straight match, The Hall rallied from the deficit away and got a game-winner from senior Andres Arcila (Cartagena, Colombia).
Unlike Friday's dramatic double overtime win at Princeton, the Pirates were able to close out the win in regulation and faced only a one-goal deficit. After the Quakers took a 1-0 lead in the 26th minute, The Hall quickly found an equalizer with a Marco Neves (Tracy, Calif.) header barely a minute later. The contest went to the half level at 1-1 after Neves' second goal in as many matches.
Turning Points
Early in the second half, Neves was taken down about a yard outside of the penalty area to set up a free kick. Arcila stepped up for the chance and was able to catch the Penn defense off guard, quickly resetting and rifling a shot into the left side of the cage. The goal in the 59th minute gave the Pirates a 2-1 advantage.
Late in regulation Penn had a pair of quality looks at an equalizer that were thwarted by keeper Elliot Munford (Auckland, New Zealand). In the 85th minute, Penn's goal scorer Joe Swenson broke in with a clean look on goal and fired a bouncing shot that Munford was able to smother. In the 87th the Quakers generated a late corner kick that saw the freshman netminder come off his line to snare in the air and keep the Pirates ahead.
Goals
26th – Penn – Swenson (1) finished in box off feed from Aramis Kouzine
27th – SHU – Off corner, Penn partially cleared to Spencer Burkhardt (1) outside box, lobbed back in for Neves (2) header
59th – SHU – Arcila (4) direct free kick from 19 yards out
Inside The Numbers
The Pirates return home on Wednesday (Sept. 13) night to host Delaware at 7 p.m. The contest will be the penultimate non-league match-up and the last before the start of BIG EAST play.
