NEWARK, N.J. - On a day when Seton Hall celebrated the 25th Anniversary of its 1992-93 BIG EAST Championship team, the No. 13 Pirates helped turn back the clock with a 23-5 run to end the first half in a 74-61 victory over Georgetown at the Prudential Center on Saturday.
Â
With Seton Hall greats Terry Dehere, Jerry Walker, Arturas Karnisovas, Darrell Mims, John Leahy, Bryan Caver and coach P.J. Carlesimo in attendance, the Pirates received a game-high 19 points from both senior Desi Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y.) and sophomore Myles Powell (Trenton, N.J.). Senior Angel Delgado (Bajos De Haina, Dominican Republic) notched his 14th double-double of the season with 11 points and a game-high 13 rebounds to go with five assists.
Senior Khadeen Carrington (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led all players with six assists, and Powell led everyone with a career-high six steals.
Seton Hall improved its record to 15-3 overall and 4-1 in the BIG EAST while extending its home winning streak to 13 games dating back to last season.
Â
Turning Point:
Georgetown used a 7-0 run to jump out to an early 21-11 lead just 6:41 into the game, but the Pirates methodically chipped away. After the 1992-93 team was honored at the under-8 media timeout, they used a 23-5 burst to take the lead for good. Powell was the catalyst, pouring in 10 of the 22 points, including a three-pointer at 6:38 and a huge steal and three-point play with 1:54 remaining.Â
Rodriguez also contributed eight points during the run, and senior Ismael Sanogo (Newark, N.J.) capped it with silky smooth jumper to send the Pirates into halftime leading 44-31. The Pirates held the Hoyas scoreless over the final 5:06 of the half.
Â
In the second half, Georgetown cut the Pirates lead to eight points with 7:54 to go, but the Hoyas couldn't get closer as The Hall went down low to Delgado to snap a small scoreless drought. The senior calmly sank a layup over Georgetown's Jessie Govan with 6:39 to play to boost the lead back into double figures, and the Pirates went back up by as many as 16.
