Delgado Sets Record, Pirates Top DePaul
1/28/2018 6:33:00 PM | Men's Basketball
CHICAGO - Senior Angel Delgado (Bajos De Haina, Dominican Republic) became the new BIG EAST rebounds king, and sophomore Myles Powell (Trenton, N.J.) led four Seton Hall men's basketball double-digit scorers with 21 points as the Pirates took down DePaul, 86-70, Sunday at Wintrust Arena. The Pirates are now 5-3 in conference for the first time since 2008 and 16-5 overall.
Delgado finished the game with 10 points and 19 rebounds, giving him his 65th career double-double and 15th of the season. His second rebound of the day was his career 702nd in BIG EAST competition, surpassing Syracuse's Derrick Coleman (1986-90), whose record of 701 stood for 28 years.Â
Powell was 7-for-14 from the field and 4-for-9 from three for his 21-point day. Joining him and Delgado in double figures were senior Khadeen Carrington (Brooklyn, N.Y.), who added 15 points and five assists, and senior Desi Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y.), who had 14 points and five assists.

/> Turning Point
Seton Hall led the entire game, but it was a 10-0 run late in the first half that helped the Pirates gain some separation. Delgado started the run with back-to-back paint jumpers. Then the Pirates bench, which scored 19 points in the game, came up big as sophomore Eron Gordon (Indianapolis, Ind.) drained a three-pointer in the corner and grabbed a rebound on a missed three on the very next possession. Junior Michael Nzei (Makurdi, Nigeria) then connected on a layup and drew a foul before completing the three-point play with a free throw to put The Hall on top, 44-27. The score was 46-31 at halftime.
The lead grew to as much as 19 in the second half after Rodriguez's three-point play at 13:17, but DePaul had another run in it as the Blue Demons scored nine consecutive points from 9:50 to 8:09, punctuated by Tre'Darius McCallum's layup to make it an eight-point game, 66-58.
However, it was Powell who then took the wind out of DePaul's sails. After senior Ismael Sanogo (Newark, N.J.) blocked a Max Strus shot, the Pirates came back down and Rodriguez drew defenders in the lane and then shot a pass to Powell, who sank a corner three-pointer to quiet the crowd and put The Hall back up 11, 69-58. After Brandon Cyrus made one of two free throws, the Pirates repeated the effort as Carrington drove and then kicked out to Powell for another swishing three to make it a 13-point game. Rodriguez finished off DePaul on a layup with 5:48 to go to make it a 15-point lead, and the Blue Demons never got closer than 11 the rest of the game.
