South Orange, N.J. - After completing his fifth season in charge of the Seton Hall women's soccer program, head coach Rick Stainton is leaving his position to pursue new opportunities, Seton Hall Vice President and Director of Athletics Patrick Lyons announced Monday. Seton Hall will now commence a national search for his successor.
Â
"We want to thank Rick for all that he's done for Seton Hall women's soccer student-athletes in his five years, both as a coach and a mentor," Lyons said. "We wish him all the best in his future endeavors.
Â
"As we move towards the future, we are excited to identify the next leader of our women's soccer program who can develop the Pirates into a perennial contender for the BIG EAST Championship while maintaining the high standard of academic success the program has held for itself."
Â
Stainton, who was named the Pirates head coach on Dec. 17, 2013 and previously had spent two seasons as an assistant coach at The Hall from 2011-12, had a huge emphasis on academic excellence during his time in South Orange. In all five of his years, Seton Hall was recognized with the United Soccer Coaches Team Academic Award for boasting a program grade point average of 3.0 or higher. His student-athletes accumulated 110 selections to the BIG EAST All-Academic team for having an academic year grade-point average above 3.0.
Â
In addition, many of Stainton's student-athletes were inducted into the Chi Alpha Sigma honor society for boasting a 3.4 grade point average or higher, and the program had an NCAA Academic Progress Rate score of 990 or above for all five years, including 995 in the 2018 report.
Â
On the field, Stainton's defensive-minded squads produced 18 clean sheets, and one of those shutouts was a 1-0 home win over Marquette on Oct. 1, 2015, the program's first-ever win over the perennial power Golden Eagles.
"I am grateful and proud of the character, commitment and contributions from our student-athletes and staff during my years at Seton Hall," Stainton said. "However, at this time, I have decided to resign as head coach to pursue other professional opportunities. It has been a great honor to lead the women's soccer program and represent Seton Hall. I wish all associated with the University much success ahead!"
