SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Head coach Clay White announced the 2018 Seton Hall men's golf spring schedule on Thursday. The Pirates will participate in at least six events this spring.
The Pirates will open their spring season on February 10 when it begins three rounds of golf at the UNCG / Martin Downs Collegiate in Palm City, Fla. Sophomore Gregor Tait (Martlesham Heath, England) shot a career-best 9-under-par, 67-69-71-207 to win the event last year. Both Chris Yeom (Flushing, N.Y.) and former Pirate Linus Yip also shot under par for the tournament. As a team, the Pirates fired an 11-under-par, 287-281-285-853 to finish second by only two strokes. The event, hosted by the University of North Carolina – Greensboro, will be played at Banyan Creek Golf Club and will run for three rounds over three days.
Two weeks later, the Pirates will play with three rounds of golf at the Loyola Invitational, February 23-25 at Palm Valley Golf Course in Goodyear, Ariz. It will be the fourth straight year playing in this tournament for Seton Hall. It seems the Pirates put up historically low scores yearly at this event, and last year may have been their most-impressive effort yet. Yeom placed sixth individually with a Seton Hall record-breaking 13-under-par, 66-69-68-203. His 203 broke Lloyd Jefferson Go's par-72, three-round score, and his 13-under-par score tied former Pirate Kyle Morris for the most strokes under for any par in a single tournament. Gen Nagai (Mandaue Cebu City, Philippines) shot a career-best 8-under-par, while Yip was 5-under-par.
Only 24 hours after the Pirates set a new team record for the lowest par-72 single-round score with a first round, 277, they did it again in round three with a 15-under-par, 273. Seton Hall finished the Loyola Invitational in seventh place at an astonishing 24 strokes under par with a 277-290-273-840. The result shattered Seton Hall's previous records for most strokes under par for a single tournament (11) and lowest par-72 three-round score (857).
After a two-year hiatus, the Pirates will return to the Red Hawk Invitational for three rounds of golf, April 1-2, at Chambers Bay in University Place, Wash. In 2016, Seton Hall tied for sixth place in the highly competitive field. Both Nagai and Yeom were freshman on the squad and have experience playing in the tournament. Nagai tied for 17th place, while Yeom tied for 64th. It's the fourth time that Seton Hall has traveled to play in this tournament, with their top finish coming in 2015, a fourth place 55-over-par.
Seton Hall will return to New Jersey for an old staple, the Princeton Invitational, April 6-7, at Springdale Golf Club. Last year, the Pirates tied for eighth place with an up-and-down 20-over-par, 284-304-588. Yeom tied for 11th among all individuals with a 1-over-par, 68-75-143. The Pirates are competing in this event for the seventh straight year. The Hall has twice won the event, in 2017 and 1994.
The following week, the Pirates will head to Penn State University for the Rutherford Intercollegiate, April 13-14, for three rounds. It will be the sixth time in the last seven years that Seton Hall has competed in this event. Last spring, The Hall tied for sixth place with a 25-over-par, 288-303-303-877. Yeom had another strong tournament, finishing third among 74 individual golfers with a 2-under-par, 69-69-73-211. The Pirates' best effort came in 2014 when they placed second at 20-over-par.
Finally, Seton Hall seek its third conference title with the 2019 BIG EAST Championship, April 26-28. For a sixth straight season, each conference team will compete at Callawassie Island Golf Club in Okatie, S.C. Last year, Yeom tied for second place, among 65 individual golfers, finishing with an even-par, 74-71-71-216, for the tournament. His top-5 finish also made him a part of the All-Tournament Team. As a team, The Hall finished fourth at 38-over-par with a 310-298-294-902.
Seton Hall's BIG EAST team titles came in 1992 and 2000. Three Pirate golfers have claimed individual BIG EAST championships, Mike Costigan in 1996, Eugene Smith in 2000 and Lloyd Jefferson Go in 2016.
