NEWARK, N.J. – The Seton Hall men's basketball team had five players reach double-figures in scoring, but it fell to Marquette, 88-85, at Prudential Center Wednesday night.
All five Pirate starters scored at least 11 points with Desi Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y.) leading the way with 21 points. Sophomore Myles Powell (Trenton, N.J.) scored 18 points on the strength of four made three-pointers. Senior Khadeen Carrington (Brooklyn, N.Y.) added 15 points and a team-best five assists.
Both Angel Delgado (Bajos De Haina, Dominican Republic) and Ismael Sanogo (Newark, N.J.) finished with 11 points.
The largest statistical difference was at the free-throw line. Marquette made 20-of-23 (87.0 percent) shots from the line, while the Pirates connected on 20-of-33 shots for 60.6 percent.
Turning Point:
The first 15 minutes of the game was a back-and-forth affair with neither team grabbing a lead greater than five points. With the Pirates leading, 31-29, Marquette hit three-pointers on three consecutive possessions in route to an 11-0 run that put it in front, 40-31, with 3:39 left in the first half.
Not to be outdone, the Pirates struck back with some long-distance shooting of their own. An 8-0 run, highlighted by three-pointers from Powell and freshman Jordan Walker (Port Washington, N.Y.), cut The Hall's deficit to 40-39 with less than two minutes to go before halftime. The Golden Eagles took that one point lead into halftime, 42-41.
Out of the break, the Golden Eagles kept up their hot shooting and methodically increased their lead. A tip-in by Matt Heldt gave Marquette its largest lead of the night, 66-56, with 9:34 remaining.
With Seton Hall trailing 71-62, the Pirates made their charge. A three-pointer by Sanogo cut the Golden Eagles' lead to six points, and after another Marquette score, a pair of field goals in the paint by Carrington brought The Hall to within four points, 73-69, with 4:16 left.
A long three-pointer by Powell with just 16 seconds remaining cut the Marquette lead to three, 82-79. After two free-throws by Markus Howard, Rodriguez was fouled while shooting a three-pointer with just under 10 seconds remaining, and made all three free-throws to cut the deficit to 84-82. A pair of free throws by Heldt however, iced the game for Marquette.
