HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – Four Pirates finished in the top-10 among 76 individual golfers as the Seton Hall women's golf team claimed the team championship of the 2018 Low Country Intercollegiate on Sunday.
The Pirates entered Sunday's final round leading Albany by eight strokes. Both teams shot a 22-over-par, 310, in round two, so Seton Hall won the title by eight strokes. For the two-round event, The Hall shot a 33-over-par, 299-310-609.
Seton Hall's team victory is its second of the spring season and the third of the 2017-18 academic year, which ranks second-most in program history with two tournaments still remaining. The 2014-15 Pirates won four tournaments. In all, it's the program's 13th tournament victory in almost eight years since its inception.
Sophomore Sammie Staudt (Coatesville, Pa.) was the top Pirate performer in round two. She had 12 pars in route to her second straight 4-over-par, 76. For the tournament, she tied for sixth place with an 8-over-par, 76-76-152. It's Staudt's second career top-10 finish.
Finishing one stroke behind Staudt for the tournament were teammates Mia Kness (Venetia, Pa.) and Lizzie Win (Sylvania, Ohio). Kness had the second-best second round, finishing with a 5-over-par-77, while Win shot a 6-over-par, 78. For the tournament, both golfers finished at 9-over-par and tied for ninth place overall.
Kness shot a 76-77-153 to register her third top-10 finish in only eight collegiate events, while Win finished with a 75-78-153 for her seventh career top-10. Win's seven top-10's tie her with Karlie Zabrosky for seventh on the Pirates' career list.
The Pirates' top finisher for the weekend didn't have the best final round for The Hall, it was good enough to tie her for third place among all golfers. Senior Cassie Pantelas (Canton, Ohio) added a 7-over-par, 79, to her first round, 72, to finish at 7-over-par with a 72-79-151. Pantelas' finish is her sixth top-5 of her career, which ties Megan Tenhundfeld for third-most in Pirate history. It's also her 12th top-10 result, which ties both Tenhundfeld and Erin McClure for second-most ever at Seton Hall.
In all, the top four Pirates finished within two strokes of each other for the tournament.
Sophomore Maddie Sager (Phoenixville, Pa.) rounded out the Pirates' lineup with a 19-over-par, 81-82-163 for the tournament.
Competing as an individual, senior Macky Fouse (Aliquippa, Pa.) improved five shots in round two, finishing with a 6-over-par, 78. She competed the tournament with a 17-over-par, 83-78-161.
Tournament Details:
LOW COUNTRY INTERCOLLEGIATE
Host: Wofford College
Location: Hilton Head Island, S.C.
Course: Moss Creek Golf Club (North Course)
Course Vitals: Par-72, 5,922 yards
Dates: March 17-18, 2018, Two Rounds
The Course:
Golf at Moss Creek is some of the finest in all of the Low Country, with its two championship courses, Devils Elbow South and Devils Elbow North. Both courses were Fazio-designed more than 30 years ago, with the intention of making the game challenging for the low handicap golfers, as well as fair and playable to the higher handicap golfers.
Both of these courses are truly hidden treasurers. There is a real beauty to each of them as you ride or walk down the fairways. Each course is lined with magnificent oak trees and tall airy pines, with strategically-placed sand traps, large ponds and water tributaries, and last but not least are the salt marshes which change twice daily with the tides. All this beauty, and there is still more! While you are playing your round of golf you may see alligators sunning on the banks, or you might spot an egret or hawk, or even an eagle swooping down to snatch a fish out of one of the many ponds, and on occasion you could see a family of wild turkeys scampering across a fairway trying to avoid a barrage of tee shots coming down on them.
For the purposes of the Low Country Intercollegiate, the golf course will play a par of 72 over 5,922 yards.
The Field:
In addition to Seton Hall and host Wofford, the field was comprised of 11 other teams including: Albany, Appalachian State, Bethune-Cookman, Citadel, Findlay, Gardner-Webb, Indiana State, Presbyterian, Quinnipiac, USC Beaufort and USC Upstate.
Up Next:
Seton Hall will return to action, April 14-15, for three rounds of golf at the Lady Buckeye Spring Invitational in Columbus, Ohio.
