Nagai, Yeom Lead Pirates in BIG EAST Round One
4/29/2018 5:36:00 PM | Men's Golf
CALLAWASSIE ISLAND, S.C. – Juniors Gen Nagai (Mandaue Cebu City, Philippines) and Chris Yeom (Flushing, N.Y.) each shot a 2-over-par, 74, in the opening round of the 2018 BIG EAST Championship and have positioned the Seton Hall men's golf team in fifth place after round one.
Both Pirates were stronger on the front nine and faded late in the round. Nagai was even over the front, but three bogeys on the back nine pushed him to a 2-over-par finish. Yeom was 1-under thanks to three birdies on the front nine, but he bogeyed three of the final four holes of the round. Both Pirates are currently tied for seventh place among 45 individual golfers. They're chasing the individual leaders, Georgetown's Cole Berman and Marquette's Hunter Eichhorn, who are 3-under-par.
Collectively, the Pirates first round result was uncharacteristic of how they have performed all year. The Hall was just 6-over-par at the turn, but struggled down the stretch. Over the final four holes, the five Pirates were a collective 15-over-par. Seton Hall finished with a 22-over-par, 310, 17 strokes greater than its stroke average for the 2017-18 year.
Entering Monday's second round, the Pirates trail the team leader, Georgetown, by 21 strokes. Marquette is in second place only one stroke behind the Hoyas. Both Villanova and DePaul are just one stroke ahead of the Pirates in a tie for third place.
Both Linus Yip (Sydney, Australia) and Gregor Tait (Martlesham Heath, England) are tied for 30th place after shooting a 9-over-par, 81. Yip started his morning with a triple-bogey on the first hole, but rallied to play even golf over his next five holes. Double-bogeys on holes No. 7 and No. 17 set the senior back, but he finished the day on a high note with a birdie on No. 18. Tait had two really rough holes, a triple-bogey on No. 7, and a double-bogey on No. 18, but did have 12 pars, including six straight to begin the back nine.
Sophomore Alex Chalk (Castle Douglas, Scotland) got his round started on the right foot with a birdie on the first hole, but struggled late in his round. He was 3-over-par through 12 holes, but 8-over-par in his final six holes. Chalk carded an 11-over-par, 83, in round one.
