Yeom, Pirates Make Move in Round Two at BIG EAST
4/30/2018 5:00:00 PM | Men's Golf
CALLAWASSIE ISLAND, S.C. – Junior Chris Yeom (Flushing, N.Y.) fired a 1-under-par, 71, in Monday's second round to lift the Seton Hall men's golf team to a fourth place standing with 18 holes remaining at the 2018 BIG EAST Championship.
Yeom was brilliant during the round, recording five birdies total, including holes No. 17 and No. 18. His birdie on No. 18 gave him the first sub-par round of the tournament for the Pirates, and moved him into a tie for fourth place among 65 individual golfers. Through two rounds, he has a 1-over-par, 74-71-145. He currently trails Marquette's Hunter Eichhorn by three strokes.
Collectively, the Pirates were 12 strokes better on Monday, shooting a 10-over-par, 298, which was the second-best second round of the field. The Hall entered the day in fifth place, 22 strokes behind the team leader. Now, the Pirates are in fourth place, only 15 strokes behind Georgetown entering Tuesday's final round. Through two rounds, Seton Hall is 32-over-par with a 310-298-608.
A reminder, as recent as last year, Marquette overcame a 17-stroke deficit in the final round to win the BIG EAST title by one stroke over Seton Hall.
Bouncing back from a disappointing first round, sophomore Alex Chalk (Castle Douglas, Scotland) turned in a strong round two with a 1-over-par, 73. Chalk bogeyed three of the first four holes, but had only one blemish over the final 14 holes. He birdied holes No. 9, No. 14 and No. 18 to complete a 10 stroke improvement from Sunday. Through two rounds, he is tied for 23rd place with a 12-over-par, 83-73-156.
One of the players tied with Chalk is teammate Linus Yip (Sydney, Australia). Yip also vastly improved on Monday, riding 13 pars in route to a 3-over-par 75. Through two rounds, he's also tied for 23rd place with an 81-75-156.
Freshman Gregor Tait (Martlesham Heath, England) was on his way to a stellar number before taking a 4-over-par, 8, on the final hole of the afternoon. Tait had back-to-back birdies on holes No. 3 and No. 4, and had a string of six straight pars on the back nine, before running into difficulty on hole No. 18. Tait finished with a 7-over-par, 79, still a two-stroke improvement from yesterday. Through two rounds, he has a 16-over-par, 81-79-160.
Rounding out the Pirates' play on Monday was Gen Nagai (Mandaue Cebu City, Philippines). The junior birdied hole No. 5, but bogeyed eight of the 13 holes afterward to finish with an 8-over-par, 80. Through two rounds, he is tied for 17th with a 10-over-par, 74-80-154.
