LAST WEEKEND
Last weekend, the Pirates returned home and dropped a pair of hard-fought matches against Butler and Xavier. On Friday, the Pirates fell to Butler in three sets. Senior Sophia Coffey (Sierra Madre, Calif.) had 16 assists, five digs and three kills in the loss.
Â
On Saturday, the Pirates won the first set against Xavier, but dropped the next three for a four-set loss despite a huge performance from senior Abby Thelen (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.). Thelen had a match-high 19 kills, only one attack error, and a .529 attack percentage. Senior Caitlin Koska (Franklin, Wis.) recorded a double-double, and sophomore Elizabeth Sottung (Westfield, N.J.) had the best match of her young career with a team-high 16 digs.

SCOUTING GEORGETOWN
Seton Hall and Georgetown will continue their long rivalry on Wednesday. The Hoyas have a 22-17 all-time lead in the series, but the Pirates have dominated the series in recent years. Seton Hall has won the last four matches, and eight of the last nine.Â
Â
Last year, the Pirates swept the season series. On Oct. 4 last year, The Hal defeated Georgetown in four sets in Walsh Gym. Thelen had 18 kills, only one attack error and a .500 attack percentage in a dominant performance. Both Coffey and Maggie Cvelbar (Euclid, Ohio) had at least 20 assists each. A month later, Seton Hall outlasted Georgetown in five sets at McDonough Arena. Again it was Thelen, who led the Pirates with 17 kills. Koska tallied 11 kills, and Coffey nearly had a double-double.
Â
This year however, Georgetown has been the surprise of the BIG EAST early on. The Hoyas enter the match with five straight wins, a 9-5 overall record and a perfect 2-0 mark in BIG EAST play. Last Wednesday, they opened the BIG EAST portion of their schedule with a five-set win at home against St. John's. On Saturday, they went to Villanova and won in four sets. The Pirates fell at Villanova in four sets last Wednesday.
Â
Georgetown was picked to finish eighth in the 10-team BIG EAST in the Preseason Coaches Poll. Senior middle blocker Symone Speech was a unanimous selection for the 2018 Preseason All-BIG EAST Team.
