SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – In a back-and-forth affair, the Seton Hall women's basketball team (11-5, 3-2 BIG EAST) defended its home court and gutted out a 79-73 victory over Providence (10-8, 2-4 BIG EAST) on Sunday afternoon at Walsh Gym. Nicole Jimenez (Miami, Fla.) and Shadeen Samuels (Ossining, N.Y.) tied for the game-high with 19 points apiece, leading four Pirates in double-figures.
Samuels also grabbed 10 rebounds and dished out five assists, capping a stellar weekend with her third-straight double-double and sixth of the season. Also in double-figures for the Pirates were Desiree Elmore (Hartford, Conn.) and Inja Butina (Zagreb, Croatia), who scored 16 and 11 points, respectively.
The contest featured nine ties and five lead changes as both teams led for over 15 minutes of game time. The Pirates used a 10-0 spurt late in the second quarter to take a 38-33 lead to the break, but Providence would pull back even late in the third and the contest went to the final quarter all level at 56-56.
Turning Point
The Friars connected on the first basket of the final quarter to take a two-point lead, but a Selena Philoxy (Queens, N.Y.) jumper and three-point play from Elmore put the Pirates back up three. Providence got the contest even again at 60-all before The Hall rattled off a 7-2 run capped by a Samuels bucket to take a 67-62 advantage.
The Friars hung around and got back within a possession late thanks to a Kaela Webb 3-pointer that cut the lead to 72-69. On the ensuing trip, Butina drilled an elbow 3-pointer with under a minute to play that put the Pirates up six and essentially put the game on ice. Jimenez knocked down three late free throws and Butina added two more to seal the win.
