
Pirates Fall in Three Sets at Xavier

CINCINNATI, OHIO – Freshman Julia Wilkins (Mason, Ohio) had a team-high nine kills, but the Seton Hall women's volleyball team fell at Xavier, 3-0 (19-25, 23-25, 17-25), on Friday.

In addition to her team-best seven kills, Wilkins also had seven digs and a service ace. For the second straight match, senior Maggie Cvelbar (Euclid, Ohio) finished one dig shy of a double-double, finishing with 28 assists and nine digs.  Â

SET 1:
The first set was very close with neither team grabbing more than a two-point lead until mid-way through the set. An ace by Elizabeth Sottung (Westfield, N.J.) tied the score at 11, but Xavier answered with five straight points to take a 16-11 advantage.  A kill by Wilkins cut the Pirates' deficit to 18-16, but it was the close they could get as Xavier went on to a 25-19 victory.

SET 2:
Seton Hall fell behind early, 6-4, but bounced back with an 8-1 run, capped by a kill by Cvelbar put The Hall on top, 12-7. The Musketeers answered with a 6-1 run of their own to tie the score at 13 and force a Seton Hall timeout. Another kill by Wilkins made the Pirates the first team to 20 points, 20-18, but Xavier responded with four points in a row to jump on top, 22-20. A kill by Haylee Gasser (Mission Viejo, Calif.) cut The Hall's deficit to 24-23, but Xavier scored the next point to edge the Pirates, 25-23.

Trailing 6-3 early in set three, Xavier scored six straight to take a 9-6 and never trailed again. The Musketeers methodically grew their lead in route to a 25-17 third set victory. Xavier had 19 kills, no attack errors and a .576 in the final stanza.

Seton Hall will return to action tomorrow when it heads to Indianapolis for a contest at Butler. Match time is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. ET.

- With nine digs today, Cvelbar surpassed the 600-dig mark for her career.
