WASHINGTON, D.C. – Seniors Maggie Cvelbar (Euclid, Ohio), Haylee Gasser (Mission Viejo, Calif.) and Madison Salkowski (Cold Spring, Ky.) played their final match in a Seton Hall uniform, and helped lift the Pirates to a dramatic five-set, come-from-behind victory at Georgetown, 3-2 (23-25, 18-25, 25-18, 25-19, 15-12), on Sunday.
Â
Seton Hall's victory is its first after dropping the first two sets since outlasting Rutgers on Sept. 17, 2016. It also sends the Pirates into the offseason with a victory and snaps an 11-match losing streak.
Â
Gasser led the Pirates with a match-high 18 kills to go with 10 digs and two blocks. Cvelbar also had a double-double with 26 assists and 13 digs. Salkowski had four kills and only one attack error.
Â
SET 1:
After a very close set early on, Seton Hall grabbed a four-point lead, 20-16, late, but Georgetown responded with a 6-0 run to take 22-20 lead. The Pirates cut the Hoyas' lead to one on three occasions in the waning moments of set one, but Georgetown went on to claim set one, 25-23.
Â
SET 2:
A kill by Reece Koehler (Stillwater, Minn.) cut Seton Hall's deficit to 10-9 in set two, but Georgetown then scored six unanswered points to take a commanding 16-9 advantage. An ace by Gasser cut the Hoya lead to 21-16, but the Pirates couldn't get closer and fell, 25-18.
Â
SET 3:
The third set was a completely different effort for The Hall. Trailing 2-1 early, The Hall scored five in a row and never relinquished the lead. The Pirate lead grew to five, 16-11, with a kill by freshman Mackenzie Huntley (Leander, Texas). After Georgetown cut their deficit to four, 22-18, The Hall closed out the set with three straight points. A kill by Gasser put Seton Hall in set point and a Hoya attack error won it set for the Pirates. The Hall had a match-high .409 attack percentage in an impressive set three victory.
Â
SET 4:
Seton Hall kept up the pressure in the fourth set. With the score tied at eight, the Pirates went on a 10-2 run, and a kill by Gasser gave them a commanding 18-10 lead. Georgetown couldn't pull closer than a five-point deficit the rest of the set as The Hall went on to win, 25-19, to tie the match.
Â
SET 5:Â
Seton Hall never trailed in the decisive fifth set. A kill by sophomore Emilee Turner (Kaysville, Utah) gave the Pirates a 9-4 advantage, their largest lead of the set. Georgetown bounced back with four straight points to cut The Hall's lead to one, but the Pirates scored the next two points to go up, 11-8. A Georgetown service error put The Hall in match point, 14-10, but the Hoyas scored the next two points to cut their deficit to two, 14-12, and force a Pirate timeout. Out of the break, a set error by Georgetown completed the improbable comeback for The Hall.
