
Elmore, Samuels Lead Pirates Past Sacred Heart, 95-69

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Junior Desiree Elmore (Hartford, Conn.) had a team-high 20 points, and Shadeen Samuels (Ossining, N.Y.) tallied a double-double as the Seton Hall women's basketball team routed an undermanned Sacred Heart team, 95-69, to open the 2019-20 regular season on Wednesday.

Elmore poured in 20 points on 6-for-9 shooting from the field and made seven of her eight foul shots. She also pulled down nine rebounds, dished out three assists and blocked three shots. Samuels had a double-double with 15 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.

The Pirates also got a major boost from two of its star freshmen, Lauren Park-Lane (Hockessin, Del.) and Mya Jackson (Wilmington, Ohio). Park-Lane totaled nine points and six assists with only one turnover and three steals, while Jackson erupted for 16 points on 5-for-7 shooting in just over 16 minutes.

Turning Point:
After a somewhat lackluster first quarter, the Pirates kicked their offense into high gear in the second frame. Leading 38-28 with 4:03 remaining in the first half, The Hall closed out the second quarter with a 13-4 run to take a 19-point lead into halftime.

Out of the break, the Pirates kept the pedal to the metal starting the third quarter with a 17-3 burst to take a commanding 68-35 advantage and put the game out of reach for the Pioneers. Elmore had 10 of her team-best 20 points in the third quarter run alone.

- Seton Hall was 33-for-72 (45.8%) from the floor for the game, while Sacred Heart was 26-for-58 (44.8%). The Hall was 12-for-30 (40.0%) from three-point range, while the Pioneers were 8-for-15 (53.3%).Â
- The Pirates out-rebounded the Pioneers, 40-to-35, including 16-to-9 in offensive rebounds. The Hall out-scored Sacred Heart, 22-to-3, in second-chance points.
- The Hall was 17-for-21 (81.0%) from the free-throw line, while Sacred Heart was 9-for-13 (69.2%).
- Seton Hall forced 28 Sacred Heart turnovers, while committing only 16 for the game. The Pirates had 25 points off turnovers, compared to just nine for the Pioneers.
- Elmore scored a team-high 20 points on 6-for-9 shooting from the floor and 7-for-8 from the free-throw line. She also matched her career-high of nine rebounds, had three assists and three blocks.
- Samuels tallied a double-double with 15 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. She also had four assists and two steals.

- Seton Hall won its ninth straight season-opener, which includes a perfect 7-0 record in openers for head coach Anthony Bozzella at Seton Hall.

- Seton Hall's 23 assists in tonight's game are the most since recording 23 against Saint Peter's on Dec. 2 of last year.
- Samuels scored in double-figures for the 35th time of her career and her fourth straight dating back to the end of last season.
- Tonight, was Elmore's fourth career game of at 20 points or more.
- Samuels' double-double was the 11th of her career.
- Samuels needs only two points in her next game to reach 900 for her career.
