SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The Seton Hall women's volleyball team had three match points in the third set, but couldn't find the elusive 25th point and Butler rallied to win in five sets, 3-2 (25-22, 25-18, 24-26, 19-25, 11-15), on Friday.
Â
Three Pirates had at least 14 kills with freshman Julia Wilkins (Mason, Ohio) notching a match-high 16 kills. Junior Amanda Rachwal (Bethlehem, Pa.) finished with 15 kills, and senior Haylee Gasser (Mission Viejo, Calif.) had 14. Both Gasser and classmate Maggie Cvelbar (Euclid, Ohio) notched double-doubles.
Â
SET 1:
Seton Hall charged out of the starting gates in the first set scoring eight of the first 10 points, and a kill by Gasser sent Butler to an early timeout down, 8-2. Butler cut the Pirates' lead to only one late, 23-22, but block assists by Wilkins and Rachwal put The Hall in set point, and a Rachwal kill ended it in the Pirates' favor, 25-22.
Â
SET 2:
Butler led for most of the early part of the second set, but the Pirates took control late. Trailing 11-10, The Hall went on a 7-1 run to take the lead for good, 17-12. The Pirates closed out the set with five of the final seven points to win easily, 25-18, and take a commanding two-set match lead.
Â
SET 3:
The third set featured nine ties and three lead changes. Trailing 13-10, Butler scored four straight points to take their first lead of the set, 14-13. From there, the score was tied six more times. Leading 23-21, a kill by sophomore Emilee Turner (Kaysville, Utah) put The Hall in match point, 24-21. The Bulldogs rallied however, and shocked the Pirates by finishing the set with five straight points to win, 26-24.
Â
SET 4:
The early goings of set four went back-and-forth. Trailing 10-9, Seton Hall scored five of the next seven points to take a 15-11 advantage and force a Butler timeout. Out of the break, the Bulldogs struck back with a 9-1 run to grab a 20-16 lead. The Hall eventually cut the deficit to three points, but couldn't get closer in a 25-18 fourth-set loss.
Â
