EDISTO ISLAND, S.C. – Junior Maddie Sager (Phoenixville, Pa.) fired a 2-under-par, 69, in Monday's final round to lift the Seton Hall women's golf team to a third place finish at the 2019 Edisto Island Invitational.
Sager had five birdies and 11 pars in her spectacular third round, her second sub-par round of the tournament. For the three-round event, she tied for 14th among 86 individual golfers with a 5-over-par, 79-70-69-218.
A day after their record-setting 278 in round two, the Pirates again golfed strong collectively. The Hall fired a 15-over-par, 299, to move up one spot in the final standings. For the tournament, the Pirates finished with a 22-over-par, 297-278-299-874. It's the first time in program history that The Hall has shot under 300 in every round of a 54-hole tournament, regardless of par.
Seton Hall was able to jump their lone BIG EAST competition in the final day, Xavier. The Musketeers finished fifth at 26-over-par. North Florida won the team event, besting the Pirates by seven strokes. Delaware finished second at 18-over-par.
As well as Sager played for the tournament, she was not the top Pirate golfer for the event. That honor goes to sophomore Mia Kness (Venetia, Pa.), who closed out her second straight strong tournament effort with a 3-over-par, 74, on Monday. Kness had 14 pars and a birdie to fuel her round, a day after setting a Seton Hall par-71 record with a 4-under-par, 67. For the tournament, Kness tied for ninth overall with a 3-over-par, 75-67-74-216. It's Kness' sixth career top-10 finish.
Junior Carolina Ronchel Salas (Huelva, Spain) fired a second consecutive 4-over-par, 75, on Monday. The transfer from LIU-Brooklyn tied for 19th place with a solid 9-over-par 72-75-75-222.
After a spectacular second round yesterday, Lizzie Win (Sylvania, Ohio) slipped in a round three. The junior shot a 10-over-par, 81. For the three-round event, she finished with an 11-over-par, 75-68-81-224, to tie for 24th place overall.
Rounding out the Pirates' lineup was freshman Sarah Fouratt (Santa Maria, Calif.). She shot a 15-over-par, 86, on Monday, and finishes the tournament with a 21-over-par, 75-73-86-234.
Competing as an individual, junior Sammie Staudt (Coatesville, Pa.) was consistent throughout the tournament's three rounds. She finished in 39th place with a 19-over-par, 77-77-78-232.
Tournament Details:
EDISTO ISLAND INVITATIONAL
Host: Charleston Southern University
Location: Edisto Island, S.C.
Course: Plantation Course at Edisto
Course Vitals: Par-71, 5,902 yards
Dates: March 31-April 1, 2019, Three Rounds
The Course:
The golf course started as a dream of David Lybrand's in 1971 when he purchased the 300 acre site and set to develop a golf course, of which he knew little about. He assembled a team of locals, each with their own specialty, and began construction. Many challenges were addressed in constructing over 30 acres of lakes, and planning around the beautiful trees.
They employed architect Tom Jackson to complete the final phase. He did a masterful job of blending greens and traps which matched the terrain and beauty of the site.
The course was originally named 'Oristo', and the grand opening in late 1973 featured a helicopter landing on the course bringing Sam Snead, Bob Goalby, and Chuck Matlock to play the first round. The Pros were complimentary of the course and so were many golfers who would long enjoy Edisto's new facility. Soon after opening, Oristo received recognition from several sources as one of the best new courses in the Carolina's.
The Field:
In addition to Seton Hall and host Charleston Southern, the field was comprised of 14 other teams including: Bethune Cookman, The Citadel, College of Charleston, College of Charleston (White), Delaware, Elon, James Madison, Morehead State, North Florida, Presbyterian, USC Upstate, Western Carolina, William & Mary and BIG EAST foe Xavier.
Up Next:
Seton Hall will return to tournament action in two weeks when it plays three rounds of golf at the Lady Buckeye Spring Invitational, April 13-14, in Columbus, Ohio.
