INDIANAPOLIS -Â Five Seton Hall University Athletics varsity programs have received public recognition from the NCAA for posting a multiyear Academic Progress Rate (APR) in top 10 percent of their respective sports, the NCAA announced Wednesday as part of its NCAA Div. I Academic Performance Program. Seton Hall's baseball, women's cross country, men's golf, women's golf and women's swimming & diving programs all received the honor.
For women's golf, this is the seventh consecutive year that the program has achieved public recognition status, a remarkable accomplishment considering it has only been in existence for nine years. This is the sixth straight public recognition for the baseball team. Women's cross country has now earned five consecutive public recognitions. Men's golf earned its second straight recognition and its seventh overall. Women's swimming & diving now has back-to-back public recognitions.
Baseball was one of only 30 Div. I teams and women's swimming & diving was one of only 43 Div. I teams to be recognized in its respective sport.
"Congratulations to our public recognition award winners on this fantastic achievement," Seton Hall Vice President and Director of Athletics & Recreation Patrick Lyons said. "Academic success is one of the pillars of Seton Hall Athletics, and it is always rewarding when our programs are recognized for their commitment. Congratulations to all our student-athletes, coaches and administrators, especially our academic support team, who work hard each and every day to put Seton Hall in a position to receive such recognitions."
The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.
"Congratulations to the programs earning Public Recognition Awards for their commitment to academic success," NCAA President Mark Emmert said. "The number of perfect scores this year is an indication that schools and student-athletes are setting high bars for achievement, and we are proud that they are continuing to succeed academically as well as athletically."
Multiyear APRs for all Division I sports teams, including the teams receiving public recognition, will be announced May 8. APRs released this year will be based on scores from the 2014-15, 2015-16, 2016-17 and 2017-18 academic years.
A leader among its peers in academic success, Seton Hall's excellence in the classroom is evidenced by the department's commitment to resources and the student-athletes' commitment to placing a high value on their education. Seton Hall supports its student-athletes with outstanding mentoring and tutoring, led by the Academic Support Services staff, and offers its student-athletes a state-of-the-art learning environment in the Charles W. Doehler Academic Center for Excellence, which was built just over five years ago and offers a main study area, group meeting spaces and private tutoring rooms.
The Pirates have responded with incredible cumulative grades. After the Fall 2018 semester, Seton Hall student-athletes had a 3.426 grade-point average, which is a department record, and 143 achieved Dean's List recognition.
