NORMAN, OKLA. – Seton Hall's Gen Nagai (Mandaue Cebu City, Philippines) and Chris Yeom (Flushing, N.Y.) were named 2019 Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholars by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) for a second straight year on Wednesday.
It was a record setting year for the award as 540 student-athletes earned the title of All-America Scholar, the most since the awards inception in 1982. Out of the 540 honorees, 266 players were Division I selections, 112 in Division II, 23 NAIA recipients, and 18 NJCAA award winners. 2019 marks the first year in which NJCAA players are eligible for the award.
To be eligible for Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar status an individual must be a junior or senior academically in Division I, II, III, and NAIA, or receiving their Associate's Degree and in there last year of athletic eligibility in the NJCAA. In addition, they participate in 50-percent of his team's competitive rounds, have a stroke-average under 76.0 in Division I, 78.0 in Division II, 78.0 in NAIA and 79.0 in Division III, 77.0 in NJCAA, and maintain a minimum cumulative career grade-point average of 3.2. A recipient must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at his college or university.
After injuries slowed his 2017-18 campaign, Nagai burst back onto the conference scene this year and was named to the All-BIG EAST First Team for the second time in his collegiate career. A participant in all 11 tournaments last year, he finished second on the team and ranked fifth in the conference 73.16 stroke average. Named BIG EAST Men's Golfer of the Week on Feb. 28, Nagai had a team-best four top-10 finishes to go with three top-5 finishes and had seven sub-par rounds. Nagai's tied for second with a 7-under-par, 71-72-66-209 at the Loyola Intercollegiate. His 6-under-par, 66, in the third round was a career-best and tied for the third-lowest score in Pirate history.
Yeom became only the second Pirate in history to be named an All-BIG EAST golfer three times. It was the second consecutive year being named to the First Team. Yeom played in 10 tournament this year, and his 72.72 stroke average led Seton Hall and ranked third in the BIG EAST Conference. Twice named BIG EAST Men's Golfer of the Week, Yeom set a Seton Hall record with an 8-under-par, 67-69-136 at the Hartford Hawks Invitational. The 136 is the lowest par-72, two-round score in Pirate history.
The Pirates will return to the links when the fall season opens on September 7 for the first two of three rounds at the Alex Lagowitz Memorial, hosted by Colgate University in Hamilton, N.Y.
