Kingston, R.I. - Senior Sandro Mamukelashvili (Tbilisi, Georgia) scored 25 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, but the Seton Hall men's basketball team went cold on offense down the stretch in its game at Rhode Island, falling to the Rams 76-63 Wednesday night at Ryan Center.
Although the final scoring margin was in double figures, the game featured 10 ties and 10 lead changes.
Mamukelashvili notched his second double-double of the season and ninth of his career.
Turning Point
After trailing by as much as 14 points in the first half, the Pirates closed the gap with a 14-5 run fueled by a trifecta of Mamukelashvili triples. Seton Hall went into halftime only down one, 36-35.
Early second half, the teams went back and forth and stayed within three points of each other for quite a while. Mamukelashvili put the Pirates up three with a tremendous spin move through the lane and around defenders for a right-handed layup to make it 57-54 with 8:27 to play.
Rhode Island reclaimed the lead and went up four before a pair of senior Myles Cale (Middletown, Del.) free throws and a fast break dunk from junior Jared Rhoden (Baldwin, N.Y.) tied the game at 61-61 with just over six minutes to play.
However, that proved to be Seton Hall's final made field goal of the evening. After Rhoden's slam, Jeremy Sheppard hit a three-pointer on the ensuing possession to give the Rams the lead, the Pirates turned the ball over and Ishmael Leggett made a layup to make it a five-point Rhody advantage.
The Pirates missed their final eight field goal attempts and struggled at the free throw line in the second half, going only 9-for-17.
