Sophomore Lauren Park-Lane (Wilmington, Del.) erupted for a career-high 29 points, but the Pirates fell to No. 3 Connecticut, 92-65, in its BIG EAST Conference opener in Walsh Gym on Tuesday.
Â
The Pirates, playing in their fourth game in eight days, trailed by only eight points at the half, but a lengthy third-quarter Connecticut run put the contest out of reach. Park-Lane was spectacular, tallying a game-high 29 points on 9-for-20 shooting and 9-for-10 from free-throw line. The point guard also dished out a team-high six assists against only two turnovers.
Â
A jumper by Desiree Elmore (Hartford, Conn.) 1:10 into the third quarter cut UConn's lead to just six points, but the Huskies responded with a deafening 21-4 burst to give them a commanding 61-38 lead with 3:20 left in the third. UConn's Paige Bueckers and Olivia Nelson-Ododa combined for 26 points in the quarter alone. As a team, the Huskies shot 87.5% (14-for-16) as they pulled away in the third.

LAST TIME AGAINST PROVIDENCE
Five Pirates scored in double-figures and the Pirates outscored Providence, 24-6, in a game-defining third quarter, in route to a 71-45 victory on Feb. 14 last year.
Â
Senior Barbara Johnson and Desiree Elmore tied for the team lead with 12 points apiece. Senior Shadeen Samuels had 11 points, while Lauren Park-Lane and Alexia Allesch added 10 apiece.
Â
Ahead 36-28 early in the third quarter, The Hall scored seven straight, and a jumper by Elmore put it on top, 43-28, with 6:55 left in the period. Seton Hall went on to score the final 14 points of the third quarter, and ran the run to 16 unanswered early in the fourth quarter to build a 58-30 advantage early in the final period. Providence never got closer than a 26-point deficit the rest of the way.
SCOUTING PROVIDENCE
Providence is coming off a tough 13-19 season overall and a 3-15 mark in BIG EAST Conference play. The Friars edged Georgetown, 49-46, in the opening round of the BIG EAST Championship, but fell in the quarterfinals to eventual champion, DePaul, 97-59, which effectively ended their season.
Â
This season, Providence is predicted to finish 10th in the 11-team BIG EAST Conference, according to the Preseason Coaches' Poll. The Friars return four of their top six scorers from a year ago, including leading scorer Mary Baskerville. The junior lead Providence with 11.8 points and 7.6 rebounds per game last year. Also returning are Kyra Spiwak and Alyssa Geary, players that averaged at least 8.0 points per game last year.
Â
Providence has been one of few teams that hasn't been adversely affected yet by COVID-19, having played nine of a possible 10 games. The Friars are currently 4-5 overall and 2-2 in the BIG EAST. They're coming off a 64-50 loss at Xavier on New Year's Eve. The Friars were without leading scorer Mary Baskerville in the contest.
