CHICAGO – The Seton Hall women's basketball team drained 16 three-pointers, a single-game program record, in route to a comfortable 83-57 rout of fifth-seeded Butler in the quarterfinals of the 2020 BIG EAST Championship Saturday at Wintrust Arena.
For a second straight game against Butler, Seton Hall never trailed, draining six three-pointers in the opening quarter to set the tone early. For the game, the Pirates' 16 made trifectas is one shy of tying the tournament record.
Senior Alexis Lewis (Wilkes-Barre, Pa.) scored a game-high 20 points and matched her season-high with six made three-pointers. Freshman Lauren Park-Lane (Wilmington, Del.) erupted for a career-high 17 points to go with a game-high seven assists.
Senior Shadeen Samuels (Ossining, N.Y.) finished with a double-double with 17 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Freshman Mya Jackson (Wilmington, Ohio) was a fourth Pirate to reach double-figures in scoring, totaling 13 on the strength of three made three-pointers.
The Story:
Seton Hall started the game on fire from the field, three-pointers by Samuels, Lewis and Park-Lane enabled the Pirates to start the game with a 12-0 run. Butler didn't score until the 4:50 mark of the first quarter. Lewis' third made trifecta of the quarter extended The Hall's game-opening run to 18-2 with 2:58 left in the frame.
A late Butler run cut their deficit to just nine at the end of the first quarter, but the second quarter belonged to the Pirates. Leading 36-25, The Hall closed out the first half with a 9-0 run, keeping Butler off the scoreboard for the final 4:08. A third Park-Lane three-pointer with only 38 seconds left before halftime gave the Pirates a commanding 48-25 advantage at the break.
Park-Lane matched her career-high with 15 points in the first half alone, and the Pirates connected on eight of 14 three-point attempts, while turning Butler over 12 times to build the big lead.
While the Pirate lead never got less than 19 points during the third quarter, Samuels' three-pointer to open the fourth gave The Hall its largest lead of the game, 67-40, with 9:29 left to play. The Pirates rolled to the victory from there.
Seton Hall will return to action tomorrow when it continues play at the 2020 BIG EAST Championship with a semifinal contest against top-seeded DePaul at Wintrust Arena in Chicago. Tip time is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. ET. The game will be televised nationally on FS1, and of course will be available via 89.5 FM WSOU or wsou.net.
