LAST WEEK
Seton Hall was back in action last weekend, and went 1-1 on the road in BIG EAST Conference play. The Hall fell in five grueling sets at Xavier, dropping all three sets by two points each, but bounced back in a huge way and swept Butler in Indianapolis on Saturday.
Â
Six Pirates recorded at least nine kills and the Pirates rallied from a two-set deficit, but ultimately fell on the road to Xavier, 3-2 (23-25, 24-26, 25-22, 25-21, 13-15), on Friday. In one of the closest matches the Pirates have played all year, the teams combined for 42 ties and 20 lead changes. Junior Madeline Matheny (Wilmington, Del.) and Taylor Jakubowski (Lake in the Hills, Ill.) recorded double-doubles. Matheny had a team-best 12 kills to go with a career-high 21 digs. Jakubowski had another impressive 20/20 performance, registering 27 assists and a team-best 24 digs.
Â
Sophomore Perri Lucas (Chicago, Ill.) had a team-high 13 kills, Jakubowski had another double-double as the Pirates swept Butler, 3-0 (25-15, 25-21, 26-24), on Saturday. Lucas was brilliant offensively, collecting a team-high 13 kills to go with only three attack errors and three digs. Jakubowski collected her fourth straight double-double with a team-best 16 assists, 15 digs and four kills.

SCOUTING DE PAUL
Seton Hall has dominated the all-time series, winning 19 of 22 meetings, but DePaul has won the last two contests. The Blue Demons swept the Pirates in a pair of four-set matches during the 2019 season. Due to the COVID-19-shortened schedule, the teams didn't play each other during the 2021 spring season.
Â
DePaul is coming off a 6-5 season during the abbreviated 2021 spring. They went 3-5 in the BIG EAST West and didn't qualify for the BIG EAST Tournament. Two years ago, in their last full season, the Blue Demons went 14-16 overall and 6-12 in the BIG EAST, which includes a pair of victories over Seton Hall.
Â
This season, the Blue Demons were picked to finish in a tie for sixth place in the 11-team BIG EAST Conference, according to the Preseason Coaches' Poll.Â
Â
DePaul enters the weekend with a 10-8 record overall and a 3-3 mark in conference play. Most recently, the Blue Demons split a pair of contests last weekend. They were swept in Omaha against Creighton on Friday, but bounced back to sweep Providence on the road on Sunday. DePaul's two other BIG EAST victories came in the form of road sweeps at Georgetown and Villanova.
Â
SCOUTING MARQUETTE
Marquette holds an 18-5 all-time series lead against Seton Hall and has won the last nine matches in the series. Furthermore, they've won the last nine sets. Due to the COVID-19-shortened schedule, the teams didn't play each other during the 2021 spring season.Â
Â
Marquette is coming off a 10-4 season during the abbreviated 2021 spring. They went 4-2 in the BIG EAST West and qualified for the BIG EAST Tournament. The Golden Eagles swept St. John's in the semifinals, but fell in four sets to Creighton in the title match. Two years ago, in their last full season, Marquette went 28-6 overall and 16-2 in the BIG EAST, which includes a pair of victories over Seton Hall. The Golden Eagles were upset by St. John's in the BIG EAST Championship match, but went on to the NCAA Tournament and defeated Dayton before falling to Purdue in the second round.
Â
This season, the Golden Eagles were picked to finish in second place in the 11-team BIG EAST Conference, according to the Preseason Coaches' Poll. Marquette received three first place votes and finished second in the voting only to defending champion Creighton. Middle Blocker Savannah Rennie and setter Taylor Wolf were named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team.Â
Â
Marquette enters the weekend with a 14-3 record overall and an impressive 5-1 mark in conference play. Most recently, the Golden Eagles suffered their lone BIG EAST loss of the season, a four-set setback at Creighton on Sunday. Earlier in the weekend, Marquette swept Providence on the road. The Golden Eagles have also registered BIG EAST victories over Connecticut, DePaul, Georgetown and Villanova.
Â
UP NEXT
