LAST WEEK
Seton Hall dropped a pair of matches last weekend against tough BIG EAST opponents. The Hall fell in four sets against national-power Marquette on Friday, before dropping a hard-fought five-setter to DePaul on Saturday.
Â
Sophomore Tsvetelina Ilieva (Sofia, Bulgaria) had a team-high 11 kills and Cagla Bengi (Bursa, Turkey) notched her first career double-double, but the Pirates fell to Marquette, 3-1 (21-25, 25-23, 18-25, 22-25), on Friday. Ilieva had 11 kills, only three attack errors, a .348 attack percentage, five digs and two blocks in a strong all-around match. Bengi collected her first double-double with 12 assists and 11 digs.
Â
Senior Emilee Turner (Kaysville, Utah) and sophomore Perri Lucas (Chicago, Ill.) combined for 27 kills and only five attack errors, but The Hall fell in five hard-fought sets to DePaul, 3-2 (25-16, 20-25, 25-17, 20-25, 7-15), on Saturday. The Pirates twice grab a set lead, winning sets one and three, but the Blue Demons rallied late for a close set-four victory and soundly defeated The Hall in set five. Turner was brilliant, recording 13 kills without a single attack error and a .542 attack percentage. Lucas had a team-high 14 kills with only five attack errors, two digs and two blocks.
Â
Seton Hall enters this weekend with a 12-16 record overall and a 4-10 mark in BIG EAST Conference play.
Â
SCOUTING CONNECTICUT
The Pirates are looking for a season-series split when Seton Hall and Connecticut match up on Saturday. On Sept. 24, The Hall fell in straight sets at Connecticut, 3-0 (16-25, 16-25, 11-25), to open BIG EAST Conference play. Lucas had team-highs of six kills and four blocks in the loss. Freshman Anna Holland (Waukesha, Wis.) tied for the match-high with 14 digs.
Â
Connecticut enters the weekend with a 19-7 overall record and an impressive 11-3 mark in BIG EAST play. The Huskies are currently one game behind the co-leaders of the BIG EAST, Creighton and Marquette, and although they haven't clinched yet, they're virtually a lock for the BIG EAST Tournament.
Â
Connecticut enters the weekend having won five straight, and hasn't even lost a set over its last three matches. Most recently, the Huskies are coming off a pair of sweeps last weekend at home against Georgetown and Villanova. Connecticut's only losses in BIG EAST play came at the hands of the co-leaders Creighton, and twice to Marquette.
Â
SCOUTING ST. JOHN'S
Seton Hall will look to bounce back from a four-set loss at the hands of St. John's back on Sept. 26. Three of the four sets needed more than 25 points to determine a winner, but the Pirates fell in a close battle with St. John's, 3-1 (27-29, 22-25, 26-24, 26-28). Seton Hall rallied from two sets down to win a thrilling third set, 26-24, and force a fourth, but ultimately fell, 28-26, in the clincher for the Red Storm.
Â
Senior Madison Frusha (Huntsville, Texas) had a monster afternoon for the Pirates, putting up a career-high 10 kills, with only one attack error, and a .562 attack percentage. She also had seven blocks.
Â
St. John's enters the weekend with a 14-14 overall record and a 5-9 mark in BIG EAST play. The Red Storm is currently a single game ahead of the Pirates in the BIG EAST standings and is in eighth place.  Â
Â
The Red Storm has dropped their last three matches, but has won five sets over that stretch. Most recently, St. John's fell to DePaul in four sets on Friday, and Marquette in five sets on Saturday. In addition to Seton Hall, their five BIG EAST victories this season include wins over No. 16 Creighton, Georgetown and Xavier twice.
Â
UP NEXT
Next weekend, the Pirates will wrap up the 2021 regular season on the road with a pair of BIG EAST matches. The Hall will travel to Omaha on Nov. 19 for a contest at Creighton and finish the slate with a match at Providence on Nov. 21.
