Lucas notches 16 kills and four Pirates record double-doubles in the four set victory.
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Four Pirates recorded a double-double and sophomore Perri Lucas (Chicago, Ill.) erupted for a season-high 16 kills as the Seton Hall women's volleyball team upset Connecticut, 3-1 (26-24, 22-25, 25-23, 25-23), on Senior Night, Saturday.
Â
Lucas had a season-high 16 kills, only four attack errors and a .343 attack percentage to lead the Pirates to their fifth BIG EAST win of the year.
Â
Junior Madeline Matheny (Wilmington, Del.) had one of her best matches as a Pirate collecting 12 kills, only one attack error, a team-best .500 attack percentage, 16 digs and three assists.
Â
Three other Pirates also had double-doubles, Taylor Jakubowski (Lake in the Hills, Ill.), Cagla Bengi (Bursa, Turkey) and Anna Holland (Waukesha, Wis.). Jakubowski tallied a team-high 24 and 13 digs. Bengi had 20 assists and 13 digs, while Holland notched 16 digs and 12 assists.
Â
SET 1:
The opening set was one of the closest of the season as Seton Hall and UConn combined for 17 ties and nine lead changes. At no point during the set did either team grab a lead greater than two points. A kill by Matheny gave The Hall a 23-22 lead late, but Connecticut responded with the next two points to enter set point. After a timeout, senior Emilee Turner (Kaysvlle, Utah) took over. Three straight kills by the 6-foot-4 right side gave The Hall a 26-24 victory.
Â
SET 2:
Seton Hall had a .333 attack percentage in the second set, but the outcome was different. A kill by senior Madison Frusha (Huntsville, Texas) tied the set at 21, but the Huskies bounced back with four of the final five points to win the second set, 25-22, and tie the match and one set apiece. Lucas had six kills in the second set alone.
Â
SET 3:
Leading 12-11, The Hall took off on an 8-2 run to take a commanding 20-13 advantage. Connecticut was able to cut their deficit to only three late, 23-20, but a kill by graduate student Amanda Rachwal (Bethlehem, Pa.) put the Pirates in set point. The Huskies scored three straight to pull to within 24-23, but out of a Seton Hall timeout, a Huskies attack error gave The Hall a 25-23 win.
Â
SET 4:
Seton Hall had 17 kills, only four attack errors and a match-high .382 attack percentage in set four. The Pirates scored six of the first seven points and prompted an early UConn timeout. The Huskies bounced back and eventually took a late 21-18 lead. Seton Hall rallied with a 6-1 run to enter match point, 24-22. After UConn got a point closer, a kill by freshman Katie Winkler (Troy, Wis.) won the match for the Pirates.
