QUEENS, N.Y. – Perri Lucas (Chicago, Ill.), Emilee Turner (Kaysville, Utah) and Tsvetelina Ilieva (Sofia, Bulgaria) combined for 24 kills and only four attack errors as the Seton Hall women's volleyball team swept St. John's, 3-0 (25-22, 25-21, 25-20), on Sunday.
Â
The victory comes on the heels of an upset of Connecticut yesterday and snaps a seven-match losing streak to the Red Storm.
Â
Lucas was brilliant again for Seton Hall, recording a team-high nine kills with only two attack errors and a .389 attack percentage. She also had five blocks and two digs. Turner finished with eight kills, only one attack error and a team-best .636 attack percentage, while Ilieva had seven kills, only one attack error, five digs and two blocks.
Â
SET 1:
Trailing 5-4 early in set one, the Pirates scored five of the next six points, and a kill by Ilieva gave them a 9-6 lead. The Hall kept a slim lead until St. John's tied the score at 22 late in the set. Lucas and Turner had back-to-back kills to put Seton Hall in set point, and a St. John's attack error won the set for The Hall, 25-22.Â
Â
SET 2:
St. John's led for most of the second set, jumping out to a 16-12 advantage and forcing a Seton Hall timeout. Out of the break, the Pirates stormed back with a 7-0 run, and a Lucas kill gave them a 19-16 lead. The Red Storm cut The Hall's lead to 22-21, but Seton Hall closed out the second set with three straight points, including kills by Ilieva and Turner. The Hall had a .273 attack percentage in set two, compared to just .025 by St. John's.
Â
SET 3:
Seton Hall kept the throttle down to open the third set, scoring the first seven points and forcing an early St. John's timeout. The Red Storm played catch up for the rest of the set, and the closest they'd get was a four-point deficit. St. John's cut the Pirates' lead to 22-17, but The Hall entered set point after back-to-back kills by Jenna Walsh (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) and Taylor Jakubowski (Lake in the Hills, (Ill.). The Red Storm scored three straight to cut The Hall's lead to four, but another kill by Walsh gave it a 25-20 victory.
Â
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Seton Hall will return to action next weekend when it closes out the regular season on the road for two BIG EAST matches. The Pirates will travel to Omaha for a match at Creighton on Friday, Nov. 19. They'll wrap up the season at Providence on Sunday, Nov. 21.
