SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Senior Desiree Elmore (Hartford, Conn.) had a double-double and recorded her 1,000th career point as the Seton Hall women's basketball team upended Providence, 67-55, in Walsh Gym on Saturday.
Seton Hall trailed for only 3:48 during the game, taking control with a 12-2 run that began late in the first quarter. The Pirate lead got as large as 23 points in the third quarter, and despite a lengthy Providence run in the fourth, their advantage was never cut to single digits.
Elmore erupted for game-highs of 23 points and 12 rebounds for her third double-double in the last four games. She also had four assists and two steals in another fine all-around performance. Elmore's 1,000 points include 55 while playing for Syracuse as a freshman. She's currently needs just 49 points to become the 23rd player to record 1,000 points in a Pirate uniform.
Three other Pirates also reached double-figures in scoring. Sophomore Mya Jackson (Wilmington, Ohio) had 14 points on the strength of three-made three-pointers. Andra Espinoza-Hunter (Ossining, N.Y.) had 13 points to go with six rebounds, three assists and two steals, while Lauren Park-Lane (Wilmington, Del.) had 10 points and a team-best five assists.
The Story:
Trailing 14-11, The Hall went on a 12-2 run, which included a pair of made three-pointers by Espinoza-Hunter, to give it a 23-16 lead with 8:12 left in the second quarter. The Pirates never relaxed, and went on another burst late in the half. Leading 33-25 with 2:22 left before halftime, Seton Hall finished the half with a 9-2 flurry, and Jackson's fast-break layup with 29 seconds left sent it into the locker room up, 42-27.
Jackson was a perfect 3-for-3 from three-point range in the first half as The Hall shot 53.3% from the floor. Defensively, the Pirates forced nine turnovers and committed only three.
Ahead 48-32, the Pirates went on a 7-0 spurt, capped by a steal and score by freshman Amari Wright (Jacksonville, Fla.) to give The Hall a commanding 55-32 advantage with 4:22 left in the third quarter.
A 17-4 run by Providence in the fourth quarter cut The Hall's lead to 61-51 with 3:40 left to play, but an Elmore jumper and a pair of free-throws by Park-Lane boosted the Pirates' lead back to 14. Two minutes later, the Friar deficit was back down to 10, but they couldn't get closer.
Seton Hall will return to action on Wednesday, February 24 when it travels to Cincinnati for a BIG EAST contest at Xavier. The game will be streamed by the BIG EAST Digital Network and shown on FloHoops.com, and of course will be provided on the radio by 89.5 FM WSOU and wsou.net. Tip-time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET.
