Baqui reaches base three times with a base hit
BOCA RATON, Fla. – Sophomore Jace Baqui (Wailuku, Hawai'i) reached base three times including a base hit from the nine spot in the order and graduate student Matt Toke (Three Bridges, N.J.) tallied his fourth RBI in the weekend series but the Pirates fell to the Owls, 10-4, in Florida.
Junior shortstop Steve Grober (Hillsborough, N.J.) registered his third straight game with a hit complimented by an RBI, as well as his second consecutive with a run scored. The veteran infielder also recorded a team-high four putouts and two assists defensively in the afternoon contest.
Here's What Happened
The Pirates got out to an early lead after Toke peppered a full-count offering into right field scoring teammate Tyler Shedler-McAvoy (Allendale, N.J.) but the offense would then be stymied until the final inning of play.
Clutch ninth-inning singles off the bats of Grober, senior Thomas Holdorf (Freehold, N.J.) and freshman Dane Hoggard (Virginia Beach, Va.) – his first career hit as a Pirate – brought in three more runs for Seton Hall, fixing the score column to 10-4. With runners remaining on first and third base, the Owls were able to close the door on the Pirates late-game rally.
What's Next
The Pirates will return to action on Saturday, March 6, when they take on Albany in a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. at Mike Sheppard, Sr. Stadium at Owen T. Carroll Field.
