South Orange, N.J. - Seton Hall cross country senior Cristina Fernandez (Parsippany, N.J.) has been named the New Jersey Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (NJAIAW) Seton Hall Woman of the Year, the organization announced ahead of its 2021 National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) celebration, which will be held virtually tonight.
The NJAIAW celebrates the women and girls of New Jersey and their contributions to sport. The group awards Woman of the Year accolades to outstanding female student-athletes from high schools, colleges and universities throughout New Jersey for their significant contributions to their institution and community through athletic accomplishments, academic success and community involvement.
Fernandez has been an influential member of the Seton Hall community for four years. Athletically, she has been a dedicated member of the women's cross country team for three years and is training for the 2021 BIG EAST Championship in a few weeks. In 2019, she concluded the season by taking fourth overall and helping the Pirates to a team victory at the ECAC Championship on Nov. 23.
Â
On the course, she undoubtedly makes her team better, but off the course, Fernandez is doing her part to make the world better. A Biology major, she founded a non-profit group on campus dedicated to providing access to medicine, education and development for low income families. As president of MEDLIFE at Seton Hall, she has participated in international medical service trips to Ecuador and Peru where she has assisted impoverished communities and set up mobile medical clinics. Additionally, Fernandez has raised funds for various clean water initiatives for villages across South America.
Previously, Fernandez was the recipient of the Seton Hall Student Servant Leader Award. She also is a three-time member of the BIG EAST All-Academic team, an inductee into Chi Alpha Sigma, the student-athlete honor society and a 2019-20 Seton Hall Academic All-Star for having one of the top-10 grade point averages in the athletics department.
Now in its 35th year, National Girls and Women in Sports Day inspires girls and women to play and be active, to realize their full power. NGWSD 2021 recognizes student-athletes, champion athletes, coaches, administrators and lawmakers who are committed to providing equitable access to sports for all girls and women.
