SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Freshman Taylor Jakubowski (Lake in the Hills, Ill.) collected a double-double, but the Seton Hall women's volleyball team ran out of gas late to St. John's, 3-1, in Walsh Gymnasium on Saturday.
Â
The Pirates and Red Storm went the distance in both of the first two sets, splitting 25-23 outcomes, but ultimately the defending BIG EAST champions wore down the young Pirates with convincing victories in sets three and four.
Â
Jakubowski had 31 assists to go with 11 digs for the fourth double-double of her young career. Senior Emilee Turner (Kaysville, Utah) led The Hall with 10 kills and a .300 attack percentage. Freshman Tsvetelina Ilieva (Sofia, Bulgaria) had nine kills and eight digs.
Â
SET 1:
Seton Hall began the match on fire from the floor, scoring seven of the first nine points and prompting an early St. John's timeout. The Pirates kept up the pressure, extending its match-beginning run to 15-6 with a block by Madison Frusha (Huntsville, Texas). A Red Storm attack error extended The Hall's lead to 20-10, but St. John's rallied with a 11-2 run to cut the Pirate lead to a single point, 22-21. A kill by Turner put The Hall in set point, 24-22, and despite the Red Storm again cutting their deficit to one, Turner put away the winner for Seton Hall, 25-23.Â
Â
SET 2:
The second set was close with neither team grabbing a lead of greater than four points. A service ace by Julia Wilkins (Mason, Ohio) gave The Hall a 17-13 advantage, but St. John's responded with a 7-2 run to take their first lead of the set, 20-19. From there, the game was tied four more times until St. John's won the game with two consecutive points after the set was tied at 23.
Â
SET 3:
St. John's stormed out of the gate in the third set, scoring 16 of the first 20 points and forcing The Hall to burn both of its timeouts early. The Red Storm had a .458 attack percentage in the set in route to a 25-9 rout of the Pirates. The Hall had just five kills to go with five attack errors for a .000 attack percentage in the third frame.
Â
SET 4:
The Red Storm kept the pressure on to start the fourth set, racing out to a 13-2 lead, and never led by less than nine points the rest of the way. A St. John's attack error cut their deficit to 20-11, but they responded with five of the final six points to win the fourth set, 25-12. St. John's Jordan McCalla had nine of her match-high 20 kills in the fourth set alone.

Inside the Numbers:
Seton Hall will return to action next weekend when it travels to Villanova for a pair of matches, Friday and Saturday. Match time for both days is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET.
