LAST MATCH
Freshman Taylor Jakubowski (Lake in the Hills, Ill.) collected a double-double, but the Seton Hall women's volleyball team ran out of gas late to St. John's, 3-1, in Walsh Gymnasium on Saturday.
Â
The Pirates and Red Storm went the distance in both of the first two sets, splitting 25-23 outcomes, but ultimately the defending BIG EAST champions wore down the young Pirates with convincing victories in sets three and four.
Â
Jakubowski had 31 assists to go with 11 digs for the fourth double-double of her young career. Junior Emilee Turner (Kaysville, Utah) led The Hall with 10 kills and a .300 attack percentage. Freshman Tsvetelina Ilieva (Sofia, Bulgaria) had nine kills and eight digs.
Â
SCOUTING VILLANOVA
Villanova leads the all-time series against Seton Hall, 30-16, and has won five straight matches against the Pirates. The Hall's last win came in four sets at Walsh Gym in 2017. Seton Hall hasn't won at Villanova since 2014.
Â
The Wildcats are coming off a highly successful 2019 campaign, which featured a 22-9 overall final record and a 13-5 mark in BIG EAST games. Villanova earned the No. 3 seed in the BIG EAST Tournament, but fell to Marquette in the semifinals.
Â
This season, the Wildcats are off to a 3-2 start overall and a 2-1 showing in conference matches. Villanova began the season with a five-set loss to Coppin State and a three-set loss to Pittsburgh on Feb. 14, but then didn't play again until March 5 due to COVID-19 protocols. The Wildcats split a pair of four-set matches against UConn, and most recently defeated St. John's in Queens in four sets on March 10.
Â
Villanova was a unanimous choice to finish in second place in the BIG EAST's East Division per the preseason coaches poll. Junior Sophia Howling was named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team.Â
Â
UP NEXT
Seton Hall will return to action next weekend when it wraps up the 2021 regular season with a trip to Storrs, Conn. for two contests at Connecticut, March 26-27. Match time for both contests are scheduled for 6:00 p.m. ET.Â
