
Pirates Drop Second Match with Providence, 3-0

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Freshman Tsvetelina Ilieva (Sofia, Bulgaria) had a match-high 14 kills, but the Seton Hall women's volleyball team fell to Providence, 3-0, in Walsh Gymnasium on Saturday.

The Pirates and Friars split the season series, each winning this BIG EAST-opening weekend.

Ilieva had a strong match for The Hall, going for a team-best 14 kills to go with six digs and four blocks. Perri Lucas (Chicago, Ill.) nearly collected a double-double with nine kills and 11 digs. Taylor Jakubowski (Lake in the Hills, Ill.) had a team-best 28 assists to go with eight digs.

SET 1:
Seton Hall started out strong in the opening set, scoring six of the first eight points, but Providence was able to rally and tie the score at six early on. A kill by Ilieva put The Hall on top, 15-13, but the Friars scored five of the next six points to assume control, 18-16. A PC service error tied the score at 22, but Providence scored the next two points to enter set point, and two points later, took the opening set, 25-23.Â

SET 2:
Seton Hall attacked at a much higher percentage in set two, but so did Providence. A kill by Madison Frusha (Huntsville, Texas) cut The Hall's deficit to 6-5 early on, but the Friars went on a 7-2 run to take a 13-7 advantage, and never trailed again. A kill by Julia Wilkins (Mason, Ohio) cut Providence's lead to 18-12, but PC scored six of the next eight points to enter set point, 24-14. The Pirates scored four straight, but ultimately fell, 25-18.

The third set was close early, but Providence assumed control late. A kill by Lucas put The Hall on top, 9-8, but the Friars then went on an 11-1 run to take a commanding 19-10 lead. The Pirates were able to cut their deficit to as few as three points, but couldn't get closer in a 25-18 set three loss.

Seton Hall will return to action next weekend when it hosts St. John's at Walsh Gymnasium on Friday and Saturday. Match time for both contests is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. ET.
