ST. ANDREWS, SCOTLAND– Seton Hall golfer Gregor Tait (Martlesham Heath, England) fired a 4-under-par, 138, during the stroke play portion of the 2021 British Amateur, and has qualified for match play action.
Â
The top 64 players during stroke play qualify for the match play tournament.
Â
Tait tied for third in a massive field of 144 golfers with an impressive 4-under-par, 71-67-138, easily qualifying to advance in the prestigious event. He used an eagle on the par-5, No. 10 hole to fuel his opening round, and tallied six birdies in his strong 4-under-par second round.
Â
Tait will face Sam Bairstow in the opening round. Bairstow finished 62nd in the stroke play portion with a 6-over-par, 77-71-148.
Â
The first Amateur Championship was held at Hoylake in 1885 where 44 players from 12 clubs contested a series of match play rounds. Former winners include Bobby Jones, Sergio Garcia and José María Olazábal.
Â
Today, the championship is one of the biggest and most prestigious amateur events in the world, with players competing in a mixed stroke play and match play format over 6 days. The winner secures exemptions to The Open Championship and the US Open, and by tradition, an invitation to play in the Masters Tournament.
Â
After graduating this spring, Tait will return for a fifth year to compete for the Seton Hall men's golf team this fall.
