Seton Hall will open the BIG EAST portion of its schedule this weekend with a pair of contests. The Pirates will head to Storrs, Conn. on Friday for a match against the Huskies. Match time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. On Sunday, The Hall will make its home debut at the newly renovated Walsh Gymnasium. The Pirates will host local rival St. John's at 2:00 p.m.

LAST WEEK
Seton Hall had its seven-match win streak snapped last weekend at the UNF Sunshine Invitational. The Pirates dropped three matches to a trio of highly talented competitors. On Friday, the Pirates were swept by Florida International, before falling in five grueling sets to Middle Tennessee in the evening. On Saturday, North Florida improved to 11-1 on the season, defeating the Pirates in three sets.

Sophomore Perri Lucas (Chicago, Ill.) led the Pirates with 2.73 kills per set and was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Freshman Anna Holland (Waukesha, Wis.) averaged 4.18 digs per set last week to lead the Pirates and sophomore Taylor Jakubowski (Lake in the Hills, Ill.) collected a double-double in all three contests.

Most recently, the Pirates swept NJIT on Tuesday. Madeline Matheny (Wilmington, Del.) had a team-high nine kills in the victory.

SCOUTING CONNECTICUT
After an eight-year hiatus, Seton Hall and Connecticut resumed their rivalry last season. The Pirates fell in a pair of contests at UConn, losing in three and four sets respectively. Connecticut owns a 20-11 all-time series lead and has won 17 of the last 20 matches.

Connecticut is coming off a 4-7 abbreviated spring 2021 season. They qualified for the BIG EAST Tournament, but were swept in the opening round by Creighton. Two years ago, in their last full season, the Huskies went 12-16 and missed the AAC Tournament.

This season, the Huskies were picked to finish in a tie for sixth place with DePaul, according to the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll. Senior Caylee Parker was named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team.Â

The Huskies finished the non-conference portion of their schedule with an impressive 8-4 record. Last weekend, they hosted the Dog Pound Challenge, and went a perfect 3-0, while surrendering just a single set all weekend. On Friday, they swept Bryant. On Saturday, they swept NJIT before defeating Yale in four sets in the evening.

SCOUTING ST. JOHN'S
Seton Hall and St. John's will resume their long rivalry on Sunday, Sept. 26 at Walsh Gymnasium. The Red Storm hold a slim 18-17 all-time series lead, but have dominated the matchup recently. St. John's has won six straight matches against the Pirates, including a pair of wins last season. The Hall's four-set loss on March 13 broke a streak of five consecutive sweeps at the hands of the Red Storm.

St. John's is coming off a 10-4 abbreviated spring 2021 season. They qualified for the BIG EAST Tournament, but were swept in the opening round by Marquette. Two years ago, in their last full season, the Red Storm went 22-12 and shocked the volleyball world by defeating No. 10 Creighton and No. 12 Marquette to win the BIG EAST Championship.

This season, the Red Storm were picked to finish in third place behind Creighton and Marquette, according to the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll. Senior Efrosini Alexakou was named BIG EAST Preseason Player of the Year, and Rachele Rastelli joined her on the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team.Â

The Red Storm enter the weekend with a 9-5 record having won nine of their last 11 matches. Most recently, they won two of three matches at the WKU Volleyball Invitational. St. John's swept Austin Peay on Friday before defeating Lipscomb in four sets that evening. On Saturday, the Red Storm had an eight-match win streak snapped when it was swept by No. 23 Western Kentucky.

UP NEXT
Next weekend, the Pirates will remain home for a pair of BIG EAST contests. The Hall will host Providence on Friday, Oct. 1 and Creighton on Saturday, Oct. 2. Both matches are scheduled for 6:00 p.m. starts and will be streamed live by the Pirate Sports Network and available to subscribers at FloSports.
