
Pirates Drop BIG EAST opener at Connecticut

STORRS, CONN. – The Seton Hall women's volleyball team fell in straight sets at Connecticut, 3-0 (16-25, 16-25, 11-25), on Friday to open BIG EAST Conference play.

Sophomore Perri Lucas (Chicago, Ill.) had team-highs of six kills and four blocks in the loss. Freshman Anna Holland (Waukesha, Wis.) tied for the match-high with 14 digs.

SET 1:
A kill by Lucas early in set one cut The Hall's deficit to 7-5, but Connecticut responded with five of the next six points to take a 12-6 lead. A kill by Tsvetelina Ilieva (Sofia, Bulgaria) brought the Pirates to within four points, 13-9, but the Huskies again took off, going on an 8-2 run to grab a commanding 21-11 advantage. Connecticut went on to win the opening set, 25-16, holding the Pirates to a .048 attack percentage.

SET 2:
Seton Hall started strong in the second set. With the score tied at six, the Pirates scored three straight to grab an early 9-6 advantage. Trailing 10-9, UConn went on another 8-2 run to take a 17-12 lead. A kill by Julia Wilkins (Mason, Ohio) cut the Pirates' deficit to 21-15, but the Huskies closed out the set with four of the last five points. Seton Hall had a significantly better attack percentage in set two, .280, but so did Connecticut, .485.

A block by Lucas and Madison Frusha (Huntsville, Texas) gave The Hall a very early 3-2 lead in set three, but Connecticut responded with five straight points, which forced a Pirate timeout. UConn upped its run to 13-3 to take a commanding 15-5 advantage. The Huskies went on to a 25-11 third-set win.

Seton Hall will return to action on Sunday, Sept. 26 for its 2021 home opener at newly renovated Walsh Gymnasium. Match time is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. All spectators in attendance must wear a mask, whether vaccinated or unvaccinated while in any indoor location at Seton Hall University.
