
Pirates Eye Tourney Crown After Sweep of Hofstra

FAIRFIELD, CONN. – Sophomore Taylor Jakubowski (Lake in the Hills, Ill.) recorded a double-double and sophomore Perri Lucas (Chicago, Ill.) had a team-high 12 kills as the Seton Hall women's volleyball team swept Hofstra, 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-15), on Saturday afternoon.

The Pirates will now finish the event with Kent State tomorrow morning at 11:00 a.m. with a chance to win the tournament crown.

Jakubowski had a team-high 15 assists to go with 11 digs and two kills, while Lucas tallied 12 kills and three blocks in a strong all-around performance.

Only six months after playing in her last match for Hofstra, junior transfer Madeline Matheny (Wilmington, Del.) made her former team pay with five kills, a career-high 14 digs and two blocks.

SET 1:
Hofstra scored five of the first seven points of the match, but the Pirates rallied in a big way, scoring six of the next eight points to take an 8-7 lead. With the score tied at 12, The Hall scored three straight, capped by a kill from Jakubowski which gave it a 15-12 lead and prompted a Hofstra timeout. After the Pride cut their deficit to just one, the Pirates scored five of the next six points to take a commanding 20-15 advantage. From there, Hofstra never pulled closer than two points as The Hall went on to win, 25-21.

The Pirates were shot out of a cannon to begin the second set, scoring 10 of the set's first 14 points. Although Hofstra rallied to cut their deficit to a single point on two occasions, Seton Hall never trailed in the set. Leading 22-20, the Pirates closed out the second frame with three straight points, punctuating their victory with an ace by Matheny. The Seton Hall defense held Hofstra to a .029 attack percentage in the second set.

Seton Hall dominated the third set, and again, never trailed. The Pirates scored four of the first five points and Hofstra was trying to catch up the rest of the way. The Pride pulled to within 8-7, but then The Hall went on a match-defining 13-3 run, including six straight points. A block by Lucas and Madison Frusha (Huntsville, Texas) gave The Hall a commanding 21-10 lead, and it never looked back. The Pirates had a match-high .324 attack percentage in the final set in route to a 25-15 victory.
