
Pirates Fall Against Stout Marquette Defense

Espinoza-Hunter has 13 points to lead The Hall in the setback.
MILWAUKEE, WIS. – The Seton Hall women's basketball team faced the top-ranked defense in the BIG EAST Conference and fell to Marquette, 62-43, at the Al McGuire Center on Wednesday.

Marquette entered the game allowing just 54.7 points per game, 18th fewest in the nation, and limited the Pirates to just 43 points and 28.1% shooting from the floor. The Hall was also out-rebounded 54-to-25.

Andra Espinoza-Hunter (Ossining, N.Y.) led the Pirates with 13 points to go with four rebounds and two steals. Lauren Park-Lane (Wilmington, Del.) had 11 points, five assists and two steals.

The Story:
Junior Mya Jackson (Wilmington, Ohio) opened the game with a steal and a three-point play and Park-Lane followed with a driving layup to give the Pirate an early 5-2 lead. Marquette, however, responded with a 9-0 run to grab an 11-5 advantage with 4:11 left in the first quarter. The Pirates were only 3-for-16 in the opening quarter, but trailed by only six, 13-7, after a low-scoring first 10 minutes.

A pair of free-throws by Curtessia Dean (Monroe, La.) cut The Hall's deficit to 17-14, but then the Marquette defense held the Pirates scoreless for the next 5:13. During that time, the Golden Eagles went on an 8-0 run to take a 25-14 advantage. They went into halftime up 27-16. The Hall shot just 23.1% from the floor in the first half and were 0-for-6 from three-point range.

Marquette scored 18 of the first 25 points of the third quarter to take a commanding 45-22 lead with 4:27 left before the fourth. The Pirates bounced back with a 7-0 spurt, highlighted by Espinoza-Hunter's third made three-pointer of the game to cut their deficit to 45-29 with 1:56 left in the third quarter.

In the fourth, the Pirates twice cut their deficit to 14 points, but alas, couldn't get closer.

Seton Hall will return to action on Sunday, January 30 when it returns to newly-renovated Walsh Gymnasium to host DePaul. Game time is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. ET. The contest will be televised nationally on FS1.
