
Pirates Drop Contest to Xavier

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Senior Jennifer Giron (Benicia, Calif.) tied for the match-high with 13 digs, but the Seton Hall women's volleyball team fell to Xavier, 3-0 (18-25, 15-25, 18-25), in Walsh Gymnasium on Saturday.

It's the Pirates' seventh straight loss after starting BIG EAST play with wins in four of their first five matches. Five of those seven matches, however, have come to the top four teams in the conference.

Giron tied for the match-high with 13 digs to go with six assists. Sophomore Jenna Walsh (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) tied for the match-high with 10 kills. She also had five kills and two blocks.

SET 1:
A kill by Perri Lucas (Chicago, Ill.) got the match started, but five straight points by Xavier gave them the lead for good and forced an early Seton Hall timeout. A kill by Bianca Bucciarelli (Carate Brianza, Italy) cut Xavier's lead to 8-6, but the Musketeers responded with a 5-1 burst to grab a 13-7 advantage. Xavier went on to win set one, 25-18, behind a match-high .455 attack percentage.

SET 2:
The second set was much closer until the Musketeers assumed control late. With the score tied at 11, Xavier scored five straight points and the score was never tied again. A kill by Walsh cut The Hall's deficit to 18-14, but the Musketeers closed out the set with a 7-1 run.Â

Xavier took control of the third set at the start, racing out to a 14-3 lead. The Hall bounced back with a 6-1 run and a kill by Lucas cut its deficit to 15-9. The Pirates continued to chip away and a block by Maddie Klungel (Napa, Calif.) and Laila Wallace (Munster, Ind.) lowered the Xavier lead to 22-17. The Musketeers answered with three of the last four points to win, 25-18.

Seton Hall will return to action on Wednesday, Nov. 2 when it hosts St. John's in Walsh Gymnasium. Match time is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. The match will be streamed live by the Pirate Sports Network for FloSports subscribers.

- Seton Hall drops to 13-11 overall and 4-8 in the BIG EAST and has now lost seven straight matches, while Xavier improves to 15-7 overall and 8-4 in conference play.
- The Hall falls to 4-13 all-time against Xavier and has now dropped seven of the last eight matches in the series.
- Seton Hall is now 6-5 in three-set matches this season.
- This is the 15th time in 24 matches this year that the Pirates have out-blocked their opponent. They're now 11-4 in those matches.
