LAST WEEK
Seton Hall went on the road to face a pair of BIG EAST Conference leaders last weekend and dropped a pair of hard-fought three-set matches. Senior Julia Wilkins (Mason, Ohio) had a team-high seven kills and no attack errors, but the Pirates fell at Xavier, 3-0 (18-25, 17-25, 15-25), on Friday. Wilkins, a native of Mason, Ohio, which is just 25 miles outside of Cincinnati, had her top match of the year with a season-high seven kills, no attack errors and an impressive .467 attack percentage.
Â
Senior Jennifer Giron (Benicia, Calif.) had a team-high 14 digs to go with three assists. Junior Taylor Jakubowski (Lake in the Hills, Ill.) had a team-best 15 assists along with five digs.
Â
The Hall hung tough with No. 12 Creighton for the first two sets, but ultimately fell, 3-0 (15-25, 17-25, 7-25), on Sunday. Seton Hall's offensive numbers were solid through the first two sets with 18 kills and just nine errors, but Creighton collected 49 digs in only three sets to collect the convincing victory. The Bluejays have now won 25 sets in a row.
Â
Junior Laila Wallace (Munster, Ind.) and Jenna Walsh (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) had five kills apiece to lead the Pirates. Giron had a team-best seven digs.
Â
SCOUTING GEORGETOWN
Seton Hall and Georgetown will meet for the 46th time in history on Friday. The Hoyas have a slim 24-21 lead in the all-time series, but has lost four straight matches to the Pirates before edging them in a five-set match earlier this season.
Â
Walsh erupted for a career-high 24 kills, but The Hall fell in five sets to Georgetown, 3-2 (25-19, 23-25, 12-25, 25-19, 14-16), on September 30. The Hall came out of the gates strong with a convincing victory in the first set, but struggled mightily in sets two and three before being outlasted in set five.Â
Â
Jakubowski and Bianca Bucciarelli (Carate Brianza, Italy) both recorded double-doubles. Jakubowski had 20 assists, 17 digs and three kills, while Bucciarelli notched 12 kills, 13 digs and three aces.
Â
Georgetown enters the weekend with a 4-23 overall record and a 2-14 mark in BIG EAST Conference play. The Hoyas are currently in 11th place in the BIG EAST and have lost 11 straight matches. Most recently, Georgetown fell at Villanova in five sets last Thursday and to Butler in three sets on Sunday. Georgetown's Karis Park currently ranks fourth in the BIG EAST with 4.31 digs per set.
Â
SCOUTING VILLANOVA
Seton Hall and Villanova will meet for the 51st time in history on Saturday. Historically, the series has been dominated by the Wildcats as they won 32 of the prior 50 meetings, but lately the Pirates have flipped the script, winning two of the last three. The Hall won at Villanova earlier this season in four sets.
Â
Walsh had a match-high 22 kills and both Bucciarelli and Jakubowski had double-doubles as the Pirates downed Villanova, 3-1 (25-21, 20-25, 25-22, 25-17), on October 1 at the Jake Nevin Field House. Walsh was brilliant, topping 20 kills for a second straight match. She finished with a match-best 22 kills, only four attack errors, a .419 attack percentage, nine digs and two blocks. Bucciarelli had 13 kills, only one attack error, a .414 attack percentage and 10 digs. Jakubowski notched 23 assists and 12 digs.
Â
Villanova enters the weekend with a 9-19 overall record and a 5-11 mark in conference play. They are currently tied with the Pirates for seventh place in the BIG EAST standings. The Wildcats are coming off a pair of five-set victories last weekend, defeating both Georgetown and Butler at home. Kiera Booth currently ranks fifth in the BIG EAST with a .351 attack percentage, while Elizabeth Feczko is sixth with 4.11 digs per set.
