The Hall improves to 2-0 in BIG EAST play and has now won four straight games.
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Senior Lauren Park-Lane (Wilmington, Del.) scored a game-high 31 points, and Sidney Cooks (Kenosha, Wis.) added 23 more as the Seton Hall women's basketball team upset No. 24 Marquette, 82-78, on Sunday.
Â
The Hall has now won four straight and improves to 2-0 in BIG EAST play. It's their first win over a ranked opponent since defeating DePaul in Chicago, 84-73, on Jan. 20, 2019.
Â
Seton Hall put together arguably its top all-around performance of the season, out-shooting, out-rebounding and forcing more turnovers than the ranked Golden Eagles.Â
Â
Park-Lane erupted for 31 points on 9-for-22 shooting from the field and a 13-for-17 mark from the free-throw line. She also dished out a game-high seven assists against just one turnover. Cooks had a highly efficient 23 points on 10-for-14 shooting to go with five rebounds. A third Pirate reached double-figures in scoring, Kae Satterfield (New York, N.Y.), had 12 points and six rebounds, and played strong basketball down the stretch, chasing down loose balls and tying up Marquette offenders.
Â
THE STORY:
Both teams came out of the gates on fire from the field, shooting over 60% from the field and combining to go 5-for-8 from three-point range by the media break of the first quarter.
Â
Trailing 25-22, The Hall went on a 14-0 run, highlighted by a three-pointer from Jala Jordan (Philadelphia, Pa.) and capped by a floater from Park-Lane, to give it a 36-25 lead with 3:25 to play before halftime. The Pirates held the Golden Eagles scoreless for 4:56 of the second quarter. The Pirates took a 40-33 lead into the break.
Â
Down 43-33, Marquette went on a 12-2 run to pull even at 45 with 4:39 left in the third quarter. With the score tied at 47, it was The Hall's turn to take off. The Pirates went on a 9-0 burst, and a pair of made free-throws by Azana Baines (Blackwood, N.J.) with 1:04 left in the third gave them a 56-47 advantage.
Â
In the fourth quarter, Marquette twice cut its deficit to as few as two points, but the Pirates had an answer each time to maintain the lead. Leading by only three with 3:12 left to play, The Hall went on an 8-1 run to boost its lead back to 75-65 with only 1:17 remaining. From there, the Pirates were able to ice the game on the free-throw line.
Â
THE NUMBERS:
Seton Hall will return to action on Friday, December 9 when it welcomes local non-conference foe Rider to Walsh Gymnasium. Tip is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. ET. The contest will be streamed live by the Pirate Sports Network and available for FloHoops subscribers.
