Newark, N.J. - Senior Jared Rhoden (Baldwin, N.Y.) gave the Seton Hall men's basketball team 18 points and 18 rebounds, and sophomore Kadary Richmond (Brooklyn, N.Y.) hit the game-winning layup with 28.8 seconds remaining to lift the Pirates to a 66-64 win over DePaul Saturday night at Prudential Center.
The Pirates have improved to 7-8 in BIG EAST play, tying them with St. John's and Xavier for sixth place in the conference standings, and are 16-9 overall.
Rhoden helped willed the Pirates with a tremendous effort, grabbing 13 of his 18 rebounds in the first half alone. He was joined in double figure scoring by Richmond, who had 11 points, seven rebounds and five assists, and graduate student Alexis Yetna (Paris, France), who had 12 points.
How It Happened
It was a defensive slugfest in the early going with only one field goal made by either team over the course of the game's first 6:16. Â Once graduate student Myles Cale (Middletown, Del.) made a jumper at 13:44 to help break the ice, the Pirates then went on a 13-3 run that was punctuated by junior Tyrese Samuel (Montreal, Quebec) picking up a steal and then Richmond slamming home a dunk on the other end. Seton Hall led 17-5 with 8:44 to go first half.
DePaul got as close as four in the first half, but Samuel's dunk just before the clock expired sent the Pirates into halftime up 30-21.
Early in the second half, The Hall kept the Blue Demons at arm's length, but DePaul's 6-0 run near the under-12 timeout cut the Pirates lead to one and then the two teams traded threes before Yetna's three-pointer with 7:02 remaining gave the Pirates the 52-48 edge.
Then DePaul went on a surprising 9-0 run, fueled by seven free throws, to take a 57-52 lead. Graduate student Jamir Harris calmly swished a three-pointer immediately after, and then Yetna made a pair of free throws to tie the game up at 57-57 with 4:12 to go.
From that point on there were six lead changes and two ties as the teams traded blows. It came down to the final minute as Samuel made a pair of clutch are throws to give the Pirates a one-point lead, 63-62. Courvoisier Mccauley came down the other end and made a layup in traffic to give DePaul the 64-63 advantage. Then Richmond took the ball into his hands, got into the lane, backed down his defender and cut through a double team to get a tough layup with 28.8 seconds to go, putting The Hall up 65-64.
DePaul missed a three-pointer, the Pirates made one free throw, and DePaul's game-tying floater at the buzzer was off the mark.
