Baldwinsville, N.Y. - Andres Acevedo (San Antonio, Texas), who just came off his best season as a member of the Seton Hall men's golf team, qualified for next month's 122nd U.S. Amateur Championship after shooting eight-under-par at a sectional qualifying event at Timber Banks Golf Club. Acevedo was one of two golfers at the qualifying event to earn a spot into the U.S. Amateur, which will be held at The Ridgewood Country Club and Arcola Country Club in Paramus, N.J., Aug. 15-21.
Acevedo fired a two-under 70 in the first of the two-round qualifying. Then he came up huge in the second round with seven birdies against just one bogey for a six-under 66 that landed him the coveted bid into the U.S. Amateur.
Acevedo is coming off a spectacular fifth-year campaign, helping the Pirates capture the program's first BIG EAST championship since 2000. All-Region honors for a second straight season. A First Team All-BIG EAST and PING All-Northeast Region selection, he took his game to a much higher level in 2021-22, shaving nearly two full strokes off his scoring average and his 72.26 finished fifth-best in the conference. Acevedo recorded 10 sub-par rounds and three sub-par tournaments during the 2021-22 year, including a 1-under-par, 67-70-72, at the NCAA Yale Regional. He's recorded five Top-10 finishes, including a fourth-place tie with a career-best 7-under-par, 69-67-73-209, at the Hartford Hawks Invitational. Acevedo finished his Seton Hall career tied for fifth in Pirates history with 22 career sub-par rounds and ranks in the Top-10 in career scoring average.
