
Pirates Sweep Connecticut Again, 3-0

The Pirates improve to 6-7 in the BIG EAST.
STORRS, CONN. – Graduate student Madeline Matheny (Wilmington, Del.) had a match-high 12 kills, while both Bianca Bucciarelli (Carate Brianza, Italy) and Taylor Jakubowski (Lake in the Hills, Ill.) nearly had double-doubles as the Seton Hall women's volleyball team swept Connecticut, 3-0 (25-18, 27-25, 25-21) on Friday.

The victory gives Seton Hall six BIG EAST wins with five matches remaining, which matches their win total from last year. The Pirates are back to .500 at 12-12 overall.

Matheny had 12 kills to go with five digs and two blocks. Bucciarelli notched nine kills and a team-high 11 digs, while Jakubowski tallied 13 assists and nine digs.

SET 1:
Trailing 5-4 early, The Hall went on a 6-1 run to grab a 10-6 advantage. Ahead 12-9, The Hall scored three straight to give it a 15-9 lead and force a UConn timeout. Leading 22-17, back-to-back kills by Matheny put the Pirates in set point, 24-17. Two points later, Perri Lucas (Chicago, Ill.) ended it with a kill of her own. Matheny collected six kills with no attack errors in the opening frame as The Hall had a .385 attack percentage.

SET 2:
With the score tied at 12, back-to-back points by UConn forced a Seton Hall timeout. Trailing 19-18, The Hall scored four of the next five points to grab a 22-20 advantage.  The Huskies answered back and tied the set at 23.  After UConn staved off two set points, a kill by Lucas gave The Hall a 27-25 second set victory. The Pirates held the Huskies to an .043 attack percentage in set two.

Connecticut burst out to a 6-1 lead to begin the third set, but The Hall chipped away and tied the score at 10. After the Huskies jumped back ahead 11-10, the Pirates scored three straight, and a kill by Lucas put them in front, 13-11. UConn scored three straight to tie the set at 19, but Seton Hall closed out the set with a 6-2 run. A kill by Asli Subasili (Tekirdag, Turkey) put The Hall in match point, and an ace by Subasili was the winner.

The Pirates will return to action tomorrow when they travels to Providence. Match time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
