South Orange, N.J. - Redshirt junior Chris Shine (South Plainfield, N.J.) tossed five innings of shutout ball with six strikeouts and the offense matched its season high with 13 hits as the Seton Hall baseball team won its fourth straight game with a win 7-1 over NJIT on Wednesday afternoon at Mike Sheppard, Sr. Stadium.
The pitching staff for the Pirates (8-9) tallied 12 strikeouts; six from Shine, two from graduate student Dom DiRado (Vestal, N.Y.) and four from junior Jay Allmer (Cary, N.C.). Junior Zack Sylvester (Montville, N.J.) and redshirt junior Oscar Murray (Brentwood, Calif.) both registered three-hit games and redshirt junior Staus Pokrovsky (Pittsgrove, N.J.) went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run.
How It Happened
Shine put a runner on in the first inning but worked a perfect second frame, retiring the side in order on only three pitches. With a runner on first and two outs in the bottom of the second, Pokrovsky turned on the first pitch he saw and sent it over the left field fence, giving Seton Hall a 2-0 lead. The Pirates made it 4-0 in the third where Sophomore Jedier Hernandez (Trenton, N.J.) brought a run home on an RBI groundout and Sylvester drove a run in on a base hit to left field.
Shine continued his strong outing the fourth where he struck out a pair of batters and in the fifth where he fanned two more and ended the frame by picking off q runner at first base. DiRado came on and worked a clean sixth before the Pirates added on to their lead in the seventh. Seton Hall's success hitting with two outs continued as Hernandez sent home junior Max Viera (Greenwood Lake, N.Y.) from second base on a single up the middle and Sylvester pushed the lead to 6-0 as he drove in Hernandez on an RBI triple.
