Wenliang Xie and George Fricker are among the top-10 individual golfers with 18 holes left.
NEW HAVEN, CONN. – Despite battling the remnants of tropical storm Ophelia, the Seton Hall men's golf team was able to get in 36 holes of The MacDonald Cup and are currently in third place entering Sunday's final round.
Â
Scores were up across the field due to the conditions, but Wenliang Xie (Zhaoqing, China) led The Hall with a respectable 74-70-144. He's 4-over-par with 18 holes left to play and is tied for sixth among 72 individual golfers. In the afternoon, he shot a remarkable even-par, 70, thanks to three birdies and 12 pars.
Â
As a team, The Hall is 19-over-par with a 288-291-579 through 36 holes. Host Yale is currently the team leader at 12-over-par. UC San Diego is second at 18-over-par, just one stroke ahead of the Pirates. Two other BIG EAST teams are also competing. Georgetown is in fourth at 28-over-par, while St. John's is fifth at 37-over-par.
Â
George Fricker (Woodbridge, England) is also currently in the top-10. The junior is tied for ninth overall, just one stroke behind Xie. He had three birdies in round one to fuel a 1-over-par, 71. In round two, he had difficulty on only three holes and parred the other 15. He's currently 5-over-par with a 71-74-145.
Â
Senior Wanxi Sun (Danville, Calif.) shaved eight strokes off his first-round score to finish with an impressive even-par, 70, in round two. He had three birdies and 11 pars in the afternoon. For the tournament, he's tied for 22nd with an 8-over-par, 78-70-148.
Â
Patrick Kahanek (San Antonio, Texas) and David Lally (Wicklow, Ireland) rounded out the Pirates' team scoring at 13-over-par. Kahanek had the top first round of the day. He had only one blemish on the round, using four birdies and 13 pars to fuel a 3-under-par, 6, but he struggled in the afternoon. He's currently 13-over-par with a 67-86-153. Lally was consistent, shooting a 6-over-par, 76, in the morning, followed by a 77 in the afternoon.

Host:Â Yale University
Location:Â New Haven, Conn.
Course:Â Yale Golf Course
Course Vitals:Â Par-70, 6,795 yards
Dates:Â September 23-24, 2023
Â
THE COURSE:
In 1923, a 700-acre tract of swamp and woodland was given to Yale by Mrs. Ray Tompkins in memory of her husband. Under the supervision of Charles Blair Macdonald, the renowned golf course architect, champion golfer, and co-founder of the USGA, plans were made for an 18-hole golf course. With a budget of $400,000, Macdonald, in collaboration with Seth Raynor, designed a masterpiece which opened for play in 1926.
Â
Today, the Yale Golf Course is recognized as one of the finest examples from the Macdonald & Raynor portfolios. Large greens with deep bunkers and wide, rolling fairways are the core of Yale's strategic and penal character. The Yale Golf Course is consistently recognized as the finest collegiate course in the nation. The course has been the site of every significant state championship, two USGA Junior National events, and NCAA Regionals in 1991, 1995, 2004, 2010, 2015 and again in 2022. The course has also been the home of the Nike Connecticut Open.
Â
The 6,766-yard, par-70 course features large and deeply bunkered greens and narrow fairways that challenge golfers at all levels of play. Two of the holes—the 432-yard par-4 fourth and the 238-yard par 3 ninth—have been ranked among the world's 100 most difficult holes.Â
Â
THE FIELD:
In addition to Seton Hall and host Yale, the field includes 10 other schools: Bucknell, Bryant, UC San Diego, Fairfield, Fordham, Harvard, Le Moyne and Rhode Island. Fellow BIG EAST opponents, Georgetown and St. John's, are also in the field.
Â
THE FORMAT:
Teams will play five golfers and count the four lowest scores per round.
Â
THE RESULTS:
Live scoring will be available throughout the tournament via Golfstat.com. Complete results of each day's events will also be available following competition at SHUpirates.com.
