Â
SCOUTING DARTMOUTH
Seton Hall and Dartmouth will play for only the fifth time in history on Friday. The Pirates own a 3-1 record in the prior four meetings, which includes a 3-1 victory last season in Walsh Gym. Dartmouth's last win in the series came during the 2018 season.
Â
Dartmouth is coming off a stellar 2022 season which featured a 16-9 final record, which includes a 8-6 mark in Ivy League play. The Big Green were eliminated from the Ivy League Tournament by top-seeded Yale in straight sets. Bomi Ogunlari and Ellie Blain were named Second Team All-Ivy, Amelia Gibbs was an All-Ivy honorable mention, and Grace Wiczek earned a spot on the All-Academic Team.
Â
This season, Dartmouth has been picked to finish fourth in the eight-team Ivy League according to the conference's preseason coaches' poll. Blain, Ogunlari and Gibbs all return for 2023. The Big Green got off to a tough start last weekend, going 0-3 at the Towson/Morgan State Invitational. They were outlasted in five sets by Temple in their season-opener before falling to Morgan State in four sets and getting swept by Towson.
Â
SCOUTING HOFSTRA
Seton Hall and Hofstra will meet on Saturday for the 18th time in history. The Pride owns a 10-7 all-time series lead in prior meetings and has won five of the last six matches. Most recently, Hofstra defeated The Hall in four sets in Walsh Gym last season. The Pirates last victory came two years ago.
Â
The Pride is coming off a 17-12 season in 2022, which included a sparkling 14-2 mark in Colonial Athletic Association play. However, Hofstra's season was prematurely ended in the quarterfinals of the CAA Championship when it was upset by William & Mary in five sets. Beatriz Alves was named the CAA Setter of the Year and Chiara Cucco earned the CAA Libero of the Year Award. Both Alves and Cucco garnered All-CAA First Team honors and were joined on the First Team by Zyare Abdul-Rahim. Izadora Stedile picked up All-CAA Second Team and CAA All-Rookie Team honors, while Emilly Nunes earned a spot on the CAA All-Rookie Team as well.
Â
This season, Hofstra is picked to finish third in the 12-team CAA. Alves, Cucco and Sarah Pierre were named to the CAA All-Preseason Team. The Pride are off to an impressive start with victories in six of their first seven matches. The Pride swept the Hofstra Invitational defeating Siena in three sets, NJIT in four sets and Delaware State in four sets. Last week, they swept Iona before opening eyes with a four set victory at UConn. They swept Merrimack and suffered their first loss of the season in five sets to Lehigh to close out the UConn Tournament.
Â
SCOUTING STONEHILL
Seton Hall and Stonehill College have never played.
Â
The Skyhawks finished with a 3-27 overall record in 2022, which included a 1-13 mark in Northeast Conference play. They ended the season with six straight losses and only had three set wins over that span.
Â
This season, Stonehill is expected to finish sixth in the eight-team NEC according to the league's preseason coaches' poll. Returning to the court for Stonehill in 2023 is middle blocker Lauren McCloskey and libero Kristen DeLorenzo.  McCloskey ranked among the NEC's leaders in hitters with 189 kills and a .280 hitting percentage, while DeLorenzo anchored the Skyhawks' defensive efforts and was sixth in the circuit in digs with 3.59 per contest.Â
Â
To date, Stonehill is still seeking its first victory of the 2023 season. The Skyhawks are 0-7 and have been swept four times. Last weekend, they were swept by Harvard and New Hampshire, but took Holy Cross the distance before falling in five sets.
Â
UP NEXT
After the Dartmouth Invitational, the Pirates will play one more non-conference event before opening BIG EAST play. The Hall will travel to University Park, Pa. for the Penn State Classic. It'll face host Penn State on Saturday, Sept. 16 before taking on UMBC on Sunday, Sept. 17.
