SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Junior Maddie Klungel (Napa, Calif.) and Madeline Matheny (Wilmington, Del.) had strong efforts, but the Seton Hall women's volleyball team lost in five sets to Dartmouth, 3-2 (22-25, 25-18, 25-16, 26-28, 13-15), on Friday.
Â
After losing the first set, The Hall rallied to win sets two and three, but fell in an epic 28-26 fourth-set, which tied the match. The Pirates trailed for much of the fifth set, and came close, but couldn't find the equalizer. The loss snaps a five-match win streak for the Pirates.
Â
Klungel narrowly missed recording Seton Hall's first triple-double since the 2014 season. She finished with a team-best 28 assists, a career-high nine blocks, eight digs and a career-high seven kills.
Â
Matheny led the Pirates' offense with 13 kills to go with seen digs and two blocks. Jenna Walsh (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) had 11 kills, while Bianca Bucciarelli (Carate Brianza, Italy) had a successful return from injury with 10 kills. Taylor Jakubowski (Lake in the Hills, Ill.) had a double-double with 15 assists and 11 digs.
Â
SET 1:
Seton Hall got off to a rough start offensively with only three kills in its first 21 attacks. During that same period, the Pirates committed eight attack errors. Still, they found themselves down only 13-11 mid-way through the opening set. Down 22-16, The Hall scored three straight to cut their deficit in half and force a Dartmouth timeout. A kill by Matheny brought the Pirates to within 22-20, but they ultimately dropped the opening set, 25-22. Seton Hall lost by only three points despite attacking at only .029.
Â
SET 2:
Trailing 2-1 early in set two, The Hall went on a 6-1 run to grab a 7-3 advantage and force an early Dartmouth timeout. After Dartmouth made the score 7-4, The Hall went on a 7-1 run, and a kill by Matheny gave it a commanding 14-5 advantage. From there, the Pirates' lead never dropped below six points the rest of the way. A kill by Klungel put Seton Hall in set point, and a Big Green service error gave it a convincing 25-18 victory.
Â
SET 3:
The Hall kept up their pressure to start the third set. Leading 7-4, the Pirates went on an 8-2 run to grab a commanding 15-6 advantage. The Hall cruised to a 25-16 third set victory after sporting a .333 attack percentage and limiting the Big Green to just .083.
Â
SET 4:
The fourth set was the closest of the match featuring 14 ties and eight lead changes. Trailing 13-12, the Pirates scored four straight and an ace by Walsh gave them a 16-13 lead. Down 22-19, Dartmouth scored five straight to enter set point, 24-22. The Hall bounced back with three straight points, and back-to-back service aces by Walsh put it in set point, 25-24. Dartmouth bounced back, however, to stave off match point and tie the set at 25. The Big Green went on to outlast the Pirates, 28-26.
Â
SET 5:
Dartmouth got off to a quick start in the fifth set, racing out a 6-2 lead and forcing an early Seton Hall timeout. Trailing 13-10, a pair Pirates points cut their deficit to 13-12, but Dartmouth bounced back by entering match point at 14-12. A Walsh kill again cut The Hall's deficit to one, but the Big Green closed out the match with a 15-13 fifth-set win.
