
Pirates Drop Four-Setter to Hofstra

HANOVER, N.H. – Graduate student Madeline Matheny (Wilmington, Del.) erupted for a match-high 16 kills and both Maddie Klungel (Napa, Calif.) and Taylor Jakubowski (Lake in the Hills, Ill.) had double-doubles, but the Seton Hall women's volleyball team fell to Hofstra, 3-1 (31-33, 19-25, 25-19, 17-25), at the Dartmouth Invitational on Saturday.

The match swayed in Hofstra's favor after the Pride outlasted Seton Hall, 33-31, in an epic first set. After winning five straight matches, the Pirates will look to salvage the final match of the Dartmouth Invitational when they face Stonehill at 4:30 p.m.Â

Matheny matched her season high with 16 kills, only five attack errors, nine digs and two blocks. Jenna Walsh (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) had an impressive 12 kills, only one attack error, nine digs and two service aces. Perri Lucas (Chicago, Ill.) also was strong offensively with nine kills to go with four blocks.

Klungel finished with 20 assists, 13 digs and three kills, while Jakubowski tallied 19 assists and 12 digs.

SET 1:
The epic first set featured 21 ties and 11 lead changes. The Pirates had their best attacking set at .275 despite the loss. The Hall staved off six Hofstra set points to remain alive and even had two chances of taking the set leading 25-24 and 31-30. A Matheny kill gave The Hall their last set point, but the Pride responded with three straight points to close out the set, 33-31. Matheny had seven kills and only one attack error in the opening set alone.

A kill by Klungel gave The Hall its largest lead of the set, 10-6, but Hofstra bounced back with seven of the next nine points to take a 13-12 advantage. The Pride never looked back, expanding their lead to a many as seven points. Facing set point, 24-17, the Pirates collected back-to-back points to cut their deficit to five, but Hofstra ended the set, 25-19.

Trailing 15-13, the Pirates scored four straight, and a block by Klungel and Hanna Tulli (Collegeville, Pa.) put The Hall on top and forced a Hofstra timeout. Although the Pride rallied to tie the score at 18, The Hall finished the set with a 7-1 run to win set three, 25-19. Walsh had five kills and only one attack error in the third set as the Pirates cut their match deficit to 2-1.

In the fourth set, Hofstra had 19 kills, only two attack errors and a .500 attack percentage. A kill by Lucas tied the set at nine, but the Pride went on an 11-2 run to take a commanding 20-11 advantage and force a Seton Hall timeout. Out of the break, The Hall scored six of the next eight points to cut its deficit to 22-17, but Hofstra closed out the match with the final three straight points.
