
Pirates Drop Rivalry Match in Queens, 3-1

QUEENS, N.Y. – Freshmen Daria Safian (Moscow, Russia) and Sadie Reich (Wantagh, N.Y.) combined for 21 kills, but the Seton Hall women's volleyball team fell to St. John's, 3-1 (19-25, 13-25, 25-17, 17-15), on Tuesday afternoon.

Seton Hall was hoping to flip the script after following Saturday's loss to DePaul after leading 2-0. Today, the Pirates found themselves down 2-0, and had a convincing 25-17, set three victory, but couldn't continue the momentum in set four.

Safian finished with a team-best 11 kills, two digs and two blocks. Reich had 10 kills and nine digs.

Junior Rylee Nelson (Mazeppa, Minn.) also nearly had a double-double with a match-high 17 digs to go with eight assists.

The opening set featured eight ties, and was close until the Red Storm took control late. A kill by Reich gave The Hall a 17-16 edge, but St. John's responded with five straight points to grab a 21-17 lead and force a Pirates' time out. The run stretched to 9-2 as the Red Storm closed out a 25-19 first set victory. The Hall had a .000 attack percentage with nine kills and nine errors in the first frame.

Seton Hall got off to a rough start in the second set with the Red Storm grabbing an early 9-3 advantage. Two of the three Pirates' points were off St. John's service errors. A kill by Safian cut The Hall's deficit to 15-10, but the Red Storm scored seven of the next eight points to grab a commanding 22-11 lead and force a Pirates' time out. St. John's went on to win set two, 25-13.Â

Trailing 8-4, The Hall scored five of the next six points to tie the third set at nine. With the score tied at 12, Seton Hall went on a 5-1 burst, and a block by Hanna Labanowska (Olzewnica Stara, Poland) gave it a 17-13 advantage. Ahead 21-17, the Pirates closed out the final three points. An ace by Asli Subasili (Tekirdag, Turkiye) put The Hall in set point, and a kill by Alexis Opland (Woodbury, Minn.) gave it a 25-17 victory. Seton Hall's offense burst out in set three with a .348 attack percentage.

Down 4-1 early in set four, the Pirates went on a 5-1 burst to grab a 6-5 lead. Moments later, St. John's down 8-7, scored five of the next six points to jump back ahead, 12-9. A service ace by Emilee Fuller (Louisville, Ky.) cut The Hall's deficit to 16-14, but the Red Storm answered with four straight points to grab a commanding 20-14 advantage.Â

The Pirates will return to action on Sunday, Oct. 19 when they travel to Omaha, Neb. to take on defending BIG EAST champion Creighton. Match time is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. ET.
