Â
LAST WEEKEND
Seton Hall dropped a pair of hard-fought BIG EAST Conference matches last week in Walsh Gym. The Pirates took a set from Marquette in a four-set loss on Friday. On Saturday, The Hall won the first two sets against DePaul, but ultimately fell in five sets as the Blue Demons fought back from a 12-6 deficit in set five.
Â
Freshman Sadie Reich (Wantagh, N.Y.) had another monster weekend, tallying a double-double with 16 kills and 11 digs vs. Marquette on Friday, and another 20 kills against DePaul on Saturday. Both Rylee Nelson (Mazeppa, Minn.) and Emilee Fuller (Louisville, Ky.) collected double-doubles against the Blue Demons.
Â
SCOUTING ST. JOHN'S
Seton Hall and St. John's will continue their long rivalry on Tuesday. The Red Storm own a slim 22-20 all-time series lead and the teams have alternated wins and losses over the last six meetings. Last season, the teams only met once with St. John's winning in four sets in Queens.
Â
St. John's is coming off an impressive 24-13 season in 2024, which included a 10-8 mark in BIG EAST play. The Red Storm earned the No. 5 seed in the BIG EAST Tournament, but was swept by No. 4 DePaul in the opening round. St. John's decided to play in the National Invitational Volleyball Championship and defeated North Carolina A&T, Virginia and Connecticut before falling to Bowling Green in the event's "Fab Four". Senior Erin Jones was a unanimous selection to the All-BIG EAST Team.
Â
This season, St. John's was picked to finish fourth in the BIG EAST, according to the conference's preseason coaches' poll. Jones and Lucrezia Lodi return to lead the Red Storm and were named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team.Â
Â
The results so far this season haven't been what the Red Storm expected. St. John's enters its match with Seton Hall with a 5-14 record overall and a 1-5 mark in BIG EAST play. The Johnnies lone BIG EAST victory was a four-set win at Providence on Oct. 3. Most recently, they're coming off a pair of home losses to DePaul (three sets) on Friday and Marquette (four sets) on Saturday. The Red Storm rank last in the BIG EAST in nearly every team category including hitting percentage, kills per set and digs per set.
Â
SCOUTING CREIGHTON
Creighton owns a 21-3 all-time series lead against Seton Hall and has won 20 straight matches. In fact, the Bluejays have been so dominant, they've won 55 consecutive sets. Prior to this run, The Hall won three straight matches, including a sweep of the regular season in 2014. Creighton got the last laugh, however, that year, defeating Seton Hall in four sets in the BIG EAST Championship match.
Â
Creighton enjoyed a record-breaking 2024 campaign, owning a 32-3 overall record while going undefeated (18-0) in conference play to capture its 11th consecutive BIG EAST regular season title. Â The squad refused to relinquish a set at the 2024 BIG EAST Volleyball Championship, claiming the program's 10th crown behind sweeps of DePaul and Marquette. Â With the league's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament, the Bluejays swept South Dakota and Ole Miss to reach the regional round. Â The squad's historic season continued with a four-set victory over two-time reigning NCAA Champion, Texas, before concluding with a tightly contested five-set loss to the eventual National Champion, Penn State, in the Regional Final.
Â
The reigning BIG EAST champions earned all 10 possible first-place votes for 100 points to lead the 2025 BIG EAST Volleyball Preseason Poll. Outside hitter Ava Martin was elected Preseason Player of the Year. Jaya Johnson and Kiara Reinhard joined Martin on the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team
Â
The Bluejays enter the weekend with a 13-5 overall record and a perfect 6-0 mark in BIG EAST play. They went just 7-5 in non-conference play, but their schedule was laden with the nation's top opponents including No. 1 Nebraska, No. 2 Penn State, No. 4 Louisville, No. 5 Texas, No. 14 Kansas and No. 22 USC.
Â
UP NEXT
Next weekend, Seton Hall will head to Indianapolis for a match at Butler on Friday, Oct. 24. The following day, it will travel to Cincinnati for a match at Xavier.Â
