Indianapolis, Ind. - Kadary Richmond (Brooklyn, N.Y.) picked up his fifth career double-double by scoring 24 points and grabbing 12 rebounds to help Seton Hall defeat Butler, 78-72, inside Hinkle Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon.
Richmond, who also reached 1,000 career points on the afternoon, scored eight of Seton Hall's final 10 points to guide the Pirates to their fourth consecutive victory. Three other Pirates scored in double figures on the day, as Dre Davis (Indianapolis, Ind.) and Dylan Addae-Wusu (Bronx, N.Y.) each scored 14 points while Al-Amir Dawes (Newark, N.J.) chipped in 10 points.
Jaden Bediako (Brampton, Ontario) had a season-high five blocks and the Pirates (12-5, 5-1 BIG EAST) finished with 15 as a team, their most in a game in three years.
How It Happened
Butler jumped out to a 10-5 lead in the first half before two free throws by Davis and a three-pointer by Addae-Wusu knotted up the score at 10-10. The Bulldogs answered with a layup on the offensive end to regain the lead but Addae-Wusu responded with his second consecutive three-point basket that gave the Pirates their first lead of the game, 13-12, with 15:46 left in the first half.
With the Bulldogs back in front by four, 17-13, Seton Hall went on a 15-3 run over 4:47 of game time that gave the Pirates their largest lead of the game, 28-20, at the 10:09 mark before halftime. A 7-0 Seton Hall run with under 3:30 left in the first half, capped off by a traditional three-point play from Addae-Wusu, pushed the Pirates' lead to 11 before a Butler three with 46 seconds left made it a 45-37 Seton Hall lead at halftime.
The Pirates came out of the locker room cold and Butler took advantage by using an 11-3 run that tied up the score at 48-48 early in the second half. Butler later used a three-point basket to take its first lead, 62-60, since the 12:48 mark in the first but back-to-back layups scored by Bediako and Richmond helped The Hall regain the lead, 64-60, with 5:46 left.
The Bulldogs outscored the Pirates 10-6 over the next three minutes, including five straight made free throws, that made it 72-70 Butler with 1:57 to go in regulation. Two Pirate seniors stepped up big with its backs against the wall as Dawes converted a tough runner with the shot clock winding down that tied up the score and Richmond delivered once again in crunch time on a go-ahead layup with 90 seconds left, putting the Pirates ahead for good.
